Win 8 mail issues

A few different friends have called with issues with their mail in win 8. They seem to be able to receive, but not send.

Both have pop3 email accounts, and I'm coming to understand that this is the issue. For one, installing a pop3 email program (such as windows live) could make it work and make him happy. For the other...not so much, as she wants to send email from within Office 365/Word.

Am I missing the boat here? Is there a way to make pop3 accounts work from native win 8 programs or Office 365?

Office 365 Home, Personal and University editions includes Outlook 2013 which is an excellent email client or rather an excellent PIM (Personal Information Manager) which can handle all normal email protocols, including of course the POP3. There's no need for an additional email client like Windows Live Mail and such.
