With Win Live Mail open, Navigation Pane down left hand side, the Message List to the right, with Reading Pane below the Message List, I have a large pane between Message Pane and Reading Pane which wastes far too much space.

There must be a way of minimising this area - it leaves so little room to see the message body !

Thanks very much for any help

Simply click and drag the Reading Pane border to what you require.

Additionally you can from Reading Pane > Un-tick 'Show message header in Reading Pane'.

And/Or minimise the Ribbon by the ^ arrow by the blue white ? top right.

Many thanks for your response.

Yes, it is the Message Header I wanted to reduce - couldn't think what it was called!

'Click and drag' to resize the message header isn't an option for some reason but, thanks, I found where to un-tick 'show message header'.

I couldn't work out what you were referring to re 'blue/white thingy top right' but discovered right click above or below Ribbon gives option to minimise the ribbon.

So, having minimised the message header, I can't see anywhere for opening attachments. Do I have to tick to 'show message header' to do this or is there another way?

I have to admit, I don't use WLM very much as I use/prefer Thunderbird. The reason for wanting to sort out some things is because a friend is needing me to help sort some bits on her WLM (Win 8).

So, I think once I've sorted out how to open attachments, I'll be able to help her enough. Thanks

I can't believe you have to tick/untick a box every time you get an attachment? I must have missed something.

Thanks very much for all your help. It's much appreciated

You need to show the Header for the attachment files, there is an indicator in the message list. My preference is to add additional markers/flags as Attachments can be used to transmit viruses.

I download attachments first which goes thru my virus checker. I never trust any attachment from anyone even a trusted source as their PC can get infected and forward attachments laden with a virus.

I don't use any preview pane at all because spammers use it to detect your Email Address is live which is then farmed and sold.
Any Spam is deleted from the subject line, never Previewed or Opened.

A double click on the message Subject line will open an Email in a new Window which is much larger anyway.
