Windows 8.1 mail app not opening attachments

Hi. When I receive an email with an attachment, usually a document or excel file, I can't open it in the mail app.
A message appears "We can't open this file. Do you want to save it and try opening it with another app?"
If I choose to save it I don't get any choice of where the file is stored and I can never find them.
I have open office installed on the desktop which can open the file but the mail app just saves it in some unknown location.

The next time you receive an attachment, remember it's name, save it and do a search for that name.
What email program are you using?

I am using the standard one that comes with 8.1. Surely I shouldn't have to search for a file thats been saved? Isn't there a way to choose where the file is saved?

When you save an attachment you should get a screen similar to this, use the Go Up option at the top to move up a level of folders or click on the folder name to enter it, it will then save in that directory

Thanks but no I am not getting anything that gives me the choice of choosing the file location. I would have expected to get someting like that but for some reason I'm not.
Is there a setting that will change this?

Yes when right clicking that appears however the open with does nothing and the save simply saves to somewhere that windows chooses.

I am running Windows 8.1. Quite recently, I found that I could no longer open up links and attachments from my e-mail. I did download IM 2,5, which solved the problem, but all my e-mail files disappeared. I used system restore to get back to IM2.0, which restored my files, but also the original...
Hi I am not sure if this belongs on this thread and I have seen possible solutions but I don't know if they are what I need for my issue. I have a Windows 8.1 Desktop (HP) and not an upgrade from Windows 8 (I don't think so at least). Every so often I can not open the tiles. Instead it tries...

I've only been using Windows 8 for a short time. Most things are running well, but this is frustrating. I use Outlook for email. When I open an attachment, the only way I can close it is to go back to the start menu and then back to Outlook. Surely there is an easier way to get back to Outlook.
Can any one tell me how to save photo attachments received via the mail app in Windows 8 ?
