Solved Windows 8.1, IE 11, bookmarking problem

I have a new acer laptop with IE 11 and Windows 8.1, it is also a touch screen and I'm using the metro mode.
I had bookmarked/favourites on the computer but, they have disappeared. The only ones now there are the ones pinned to start. I have tried to add a favourite again but, the screen freezes when I touch the "add to favourites" icon.
After about 20 seconds, it kicks back to the start screen.
I know very little about computers and am frustrated with this. Is it me, the browser or computer?

This is very odd behavior, and should obviously not be happening. Here are a some things you could try, to solve the problem: What to do when Internet Explorer isn't working - Windows Help - BUT be sure to only bother using the recommendations listed under "Internet Explorer crashes constantly" (Second Option from top, with 5 subcategories).

I would also check for any malware if the above options do not work. Take your time with this, I have confidence it will work out. Please post back any success or failure.

The issue seems to have fixed itself. I went back to it after a few hours and it worked fine. My bookmarks even reappeared. I will look at the info you suggested and see if I'm inadvertently doing something wrong.
