I assume you use a free web-based email service like GMail or Hotmail.

Most free services give you the option to access their emails via an email client : Email client - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When using this client, you can choose to archive some of your folders locally on your hard drive.

Here is a link describing the steps needed to do it for GMail. They should apply for any other similar service : Make a Local Backup Of Your Gmail Account - Wired How-To Wiki

Thanks for the reply,,,,and I can tell you I use windows live mail.
I followed the links you directed me to but I could not make head nor tail of them
as they are a bit over my head, that's why I wanted a prog that would do it auto
    for me.
So I do hope there is one out there.

Here are other links that might help you, it shows how to identify where Windows Live Mail stores your emails and how to back them up if you feel the need to.

I don't use this particular application but as far as I know, as long as you don't delete your emails, a copy of them should always be saved by default on your hard drive, no need to do anything else. When you aren't connected to Internet this allows you to still view your emails offline. This might not apply to attachments though.
