I can't run any browsers that are not Metro and I can't DL torrents

    Hi Guys,

I just installed Windows 8 and I am having a very difficult time adjusting. I've read that windows 8 is supposed to have both the Metro browser and regular IE browser from the desktop in order for users to be able to do simple things such as watch flash videos, yet none of my browsers besides the metro one works. I can't even install another browser and I can't download torrents nor can I run utorrent.

    Please help me.

Have you tried selecting the desktop and seeing if you have the IE icon in the taskbar. Mine was automatically placed there by default.

    hi davehc,

Yes there is an icon placed on my taskbar in the desktop, but when I open it no pages load. It doesn't matter which website I try. I've tried so many things but with no luck. Any other suggestions?

I suggest you check if you even have an internet connection. In the desktop picture, usual place. bottom right on the notification area. You should see a small icon there, which must be clear(No yellow ticks, etc.)

I have an internet connection because the metro browser works, Skype works, and I am able to receive updates from the internet. I just can not get any other browser to work, which I would prefer because of the limitations of the metro browser.

Check if your Anti-Virus or Firewall is blocking other browsers.

Have you tried clicking the .exe in the alternative browser's folders? If that works, right click and try repinning.

Yes, I have even uninstalled my virus program and disabled my firewall yet I was still unable to run them.

I just tried opening the browser from its root folder but the result is the same - it just says "internet explorer cannot display the page".

    This is extremely frustrating.

It may help to reset Winsock which usually fixes this problem of browser can't go online.

    1. Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.

    2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.

    3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.
