Mail app ignores emails in folders other than Inbox

Hello all,

For some reason, the Mail app seems to completely ignore emails in any other folder than my Inbox (i.e. the Social and Newsletters folder). It alerts me (although very late) for emails in my Inbox folder but there are no alerts when receiving emails in my Social or Newsletter folders.
Even when opening the Mail app and I see there are 7 new emails in the Social folder and 1 in my Inbox, the live tile only shows there is 1 email.
I have double checked ALL the options in the Mail app and the PC Settings app to make sure alerts should pop up as soon as new email comes in. The option to alert me for any kind of email (not just favorites) is also enabled.

I have reinstalled the Mail app, I have restarted the Windows Firewall service, performed the SFC /scannow command without finding any integrity violations and have run the App Troubleshooter to fix any issues without any result.

Running Windows Pro 8.1 (Update 1) x64 bit.

As you probably know, the emails from certain sources use a rule (just like rules in the full Outlook) to file them in the Social and Newsletter folders. Being that the rule is probably invoked prior to them getting into the Inbox, it probably is bypassing the Notification.

Try dragging an existing email from one of the folders. It should ask you if you want to move just one or all future. If you answer All Future, it should basically delete the rule. When the next one comes in, see if you get a Notification. If you do, drag it to the folder to reestablish the rule. If it goes back to not notifying you, you're toast.

If you can live with all of them going to your Inbox, then redo the delete procedure for the rule and let the notifications come in.

The weird thing is, it used to work back in May; I was getting alerts even when I receive mail belonging in the Social or Newsletter folders. I have no idea what could have changed to prevent getting alerts for these emails (updates?)
Whatever the change may be, this seems like a huge flaw in the app from Microsoft since people usually create folders to get notified for important emails in specific folders.

Update:

It seems that the Mail app doesn't alert me or update its live tile even when I choose to let my emails of the social subfolder go into my Inbox.

Is there something I'm missing here?

That's the problem; as I stated I have enabled every option to receive alerts and yet it doesn't work...

I can confirm that even disabling subfolders in the Mail app doesn't fix the problem. The mail app seems to selectively not alert me for any Newsletter or Social emails even when all of them goes into my Inbox.

Yet again another update:

After removing and re-adding my account the Mail app notifies me for social and newsletter emails ONLY when I disable subfolders (thus the emails goes into my Inbox).

It it still doesn't notify me of these mails when enabling subfolders. I don't get this since it was working flawlessly a few months back.

By any chance did you change or look at notifications in each account in Settings? How about global notifications?

Tried to run the troubleshooter again without result. I have double checked and enabled every option about alerts and disabled the quiet hours option.

Disabled and enabled toast notifications according to the tutorial and the alerts still won't budge. Also checked the related tutorials.

Are you guys experiencing the same with subfolders in the Mail app? Is this normal behavior?

I get notifications for all folders. I'm wondering if one of the latest Windows updates broke this since it was patch Tuesday the other day? Can you restore it back to an earlier time?

Don't think so since this problem is quite old (2 months now for me).

Someone already posted on these forums about this. Also, this seems to be a famous problem among Windows Phone users.


I already posted at the Microsoft Community forums but the mods there always come up with the same standard "solution" protocols that don't fix anything.

Oh? Quite frankly I haven't noticed too many, although you may be right. Quite honestly, I haven't come across a fix. The non-sleep issue is another. Being somewhat of a "flagship" OS with the big changes it's somewhat understandable, but issues should be fixed over time. Quicker than the pace they're at if they want the "new way" to fly IMO. I think more problems than with previous newly released OSs, but their problems got fixed over time. Thing is too is that 7 was probably the least problematic out of any new releases.

No problems with my Nokia Lumia 1520 8.1 DP phablet with notifications either or previously with 8 on it. I'm what I consider to a MS/Windows "purist" since I run with as much out of the box Windows software. Native Defender, firewall, Modern/Metro apps, maintenance, etc. Don't get me wrong. I have some minor problems, but nothing I can't fix easily or tolerate if I can't.

As with the non-sleep issue I think there are variables that no one seems to be able to zero in on. Some don't have any problems at all and what fixes one machine doesn't fix another. Personally I think as in the past most problems are caused by faulty drivers or updates, but that's just me.

Do you have a mirror you can take it back to? Perhaps a refresh? I know it's a PITA!

I'm quite the same. Always using native apps that come with Windows and only installing the ones that I really need.

To be honest, I'm not really fond of restoring or refreshing Windows since there is nearly always something that's not restored 100% correctly afterwards.

OldGuyGeek could have a point here; alerts could depend on the source from which emails come from. In my case, social emails mostly come from Facebook. I don't know if it's the same for you. But then again, I get Newsletter emails from quite a lot of sources so I'm not sure if there's this particular rule for all of them to bypass the notifications.

UPDATE:

Just got an answer from Microsoft.com saying that they were able to reproduce the problem and that they will pass the information to the concerned team.

You're welcome. The problem is, knowing Microsoft, such things always take very long until it's fixed. Before then, there's no other solution even when it does work for normally for others. We just can't find the culprit.
