Unfortunately, its the card. It's an older legacy card and is not really supported for win 8.1. I have (well had) the very same card and it was a nightmare when it came to installing win 8 and the subsequent 8.1 updates. It works better with older drivers - I think it was around the 293.xx range of drivers. I decided to update my old legacy bios which killed my 9800gtx card - xp froze all the time and win 8 wouldn't reinstall.

Try downgrading the driver - use drivesweeper to uninstall everything before installing the new driver but, I think its time to invest in a new graphics card. I updated to the MSI GTX760 and even with an outdated motherboard (N7AD SLI) 8.1 runs perfectly.

Firefox random crashes. in Browsers & Mail
Just so I know I'm not going crazy. Am I the only one getting random Firefox 4.0.1 crashes? Most of the time it works fine, and then random sites (Ironically, mainly Windows 8 and Mozilla sites) cause it to crash, and it can't be recovered until I get rid of those tabs.
