Hi

my old W7 laptop failed and would not start Windows, start-up repair did not work.

Using Casper 8 boot disk I managed to get a copy of the Users folder which includes
the Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Contacts folder.

I now have a new Laptop and want to use WLM, is there a way to use the data (emails, contacts and calendar)
in my new install of WLM?

Thanks

Daniel

  1. Install Windows Live Mail but do not setup anything.
  2. Copy everything under: C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
  3. Run Windows Live Mail. It should be ready with all your accounts, mails etc...

I am not sure where wlm stores the contacts. Usually I export from Gmail in .csv file then import into wlm. I don't use Windows Live Accounts so if you have Windows live account then it should sync the contacts for you when you log in.

P.S It is also better to relocate this Folder to another drive, for example: D\MyMail, More secure and if anything goes wrong with Windows, you will not lose any mail. Click on File->Options->Mail->Advanced->Maintenance->Store Folder and put in the path where your mails will be stored.

I read somewhere that this works ...

On your old computer did you save the C: Users, Username, App Data, Local, Microsoft, Windows, Windows Live Mail folder ?
If so, you could try substituting the new WLM created folder on your new laptop with the saved one. Then it should be just a case of providing your password when you first start up.

I've been saving my WLM folder this way ready for such a day, but have never had to use it.
