Solved Establishing a Microsoft Account in 8.1

Hi all,

I'm considering an 8.1 system, but I see that I have to establish a Windows Live Account for the OS to function properly. Here's my dilemma - If I use the native Windows 8.1 Mail Client, will my email be local (on my HDD/SSD) (which is what I want) or in the cloud - just want to be sure before I make any decision.

Do I have the option as to where I would like my email store? i.e. HDD/SSD and/or Cloud?

Just to clarify this: If you do not need / want to use modern Windows Store Apps, you do not need to establish a Microsoft Account. You can use Windows 8.1 as if it were Windows 7 (apart of different Start Menu) using a local account.

Step 18 in this tutorial will show you how to set up your Windows 8.1 computer using a local account instead of a Microsoft Account, either when installing Windows yourself or when doing the first ever boot with computer with pre-installed Windows: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

Notice that even if you later change your mind and want to use a Store App when you Windows 8 / 8.1 is set up using a local account, you can select an email account (Microsoft Account) separately for each Store app you want to install and use, or convert your local account to a Microsoft Account.

Yes it will. You will need to ask the mail app to download everything though as the default is only 2 weeks.

Sorry mate, the windows 8 mail app by default will download 2 weeks emails by default. If you want though you can change it to download all of your mails to your disk. You just change it in the settings.

In addition to the above. FYI, Windows apps will store your messages locally under:
C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Indexed\LiveComm
and I am not sure if you can move the storage location to somewhere else. My client email is Windows Live Mail which allows me to relocate my mail messages to another HD and have multiple email accounts setup so if for some reason my PC becomes unbootable or infected by Virus etc... I don't have to worry about loss of email messages. In addition, all my personal data are stored somewhere else so C: drive is strictly contains Windows + Applications files, it will make it easier to backup/restore without worrying loss of data.

Again, not all metro apps require you to sign in with MS account, just a few such as Stores, People, Mail, Calendar, Onedrive, Skype The rest will work without signing in. Myself, I have no use for none of those so I keep everything local.

Thanks but, no, that setting only changes how much stuff is downloaded. Where's the setting that allows you to download your mail to your local disk?

Assuming you are using the Windows 8 Mail App, :winkey: + C and then select settings then accounts. You can then decide how much is downloaded to your disk. If you select "Anytime" you will get the lot.
