Email clients - tried them all still like OUTLOOK EXPRESS

Hi there

Start of rant !!.

Is it only me -- but I've tried load and loads of email clients -- and am currently using OUTLOOK from office 2010 - but I have to say to me the best was simply OUTLOOK EXPRESS -- simple clean interface -- I don't need all the calendars and reminder stuff -- email is a horrible business tool these days anyway -- don't need all the filers etc -- and apart from using IMAP I haven't yet seen an email client that is as SIMPLE, doesn't clutter up your screen with all sorts of extra panels etc and is easy to configure.

It always was a shame why MS abandoned it for much more complicated systems.

Email might have been a great tool a few years ago but it's long become too unwieldly for sensible business use -- especially when people spend HOURS a day going through totally pointless 1000's of business emails.

The email client on Android (Samsung S4/S5) seems OK too - a bit like Outlook express. So why does everybody seem to make email clients on PC's that include "features" that include things every man and his dog. DON'T want or need

Anyway end of rant -- and are there any OUTLOOK EXPRESS clones out there.

Cheers
jimbo

Ha ha, it's true. I use Outlook 2010 (because I do use the Calendar, rules, etc), but Outlook Express was brilliant. Much better than all this 'Modern App' nonsense with it's dictator like ways and lack of flexibility. Outlook Express made a good NNTP reader as well. Windows Mail that shipped with Vista was OK too.

You can make Outlook 2010 quite simple if you want though (or if you click the 'Reading View' icon in the status bar at the bottom, it won't even show the folder list on the left hand). My biggest dislike is that I find text menus are much more efficient than stupid pictures/icons:

Although Microsoft has put Office 2003 out to pasture like Windows XP, I hate to give up Outlook 2003. I've tried Windows Live Mail land Thunderbird. The new Thunderbird looks a lot like Windows Live Mail.

Ultimately I know I have to give up Outlook 2003. I've already installed Libre Office and started using that instead of the other Office applications.

Hi there

I *Might* be able to get outlook express to work via WINE in Linux -- without having to run an XP virtual machine --I need to capture the DLL's etc that it uses so all these can be added to the WINE config setup. I have some legal Windows XP SP3 disks and a few Windows XP VM's so I'll play around with themt. I think the final (SP3) version did allow IMAP connections - although in those days IMAP wasn't that common.

Anyway gives me something to do over the May Holiday period -- Europe has "Workers day", UK has something else but it's still a long weekend here.

Agree+++. Thunderbird with a simple interface is quite OK as a replacement, but am still missing OE.

Hi there

I might be getting somewhere - looks like though Outlook express has some IE integration so that could be a bit problematical -- why on earth does everybody who designs email systems assume everyone wants a FULL BLOWN PIM (Personal Information manager or similar)-- even in my work heyday - I never needed reminders of appointments etc -- if I couldn't remember them then IMO they weren't important enough in any case.

I just want a bog standard SIMPLE email - just like OE without any of the other added bells and whistles - and whether it syncs with a mobile phone or not -- I couldn't give a rat's tail toss over -- IMAP stores email on the server anyway so if you want to access it via mobile phone etc - no probs.

If people can't manage their time / days without having to logon to a Computer / tablet / phone - then there's something radically wrong with their lifestyles - or is this the new 21st century version of "The Slave Trade".

Cheers

Isolating only one of your comments. You don't have to have the calendar in live mail view. It is an option. I set Live Mail up to my requirements some years ago. Since then I have altered nothing. I just get and send mail, with or without attachments and pictures. What more can you ask of a mail program.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the suggestion -- however I don't like the almost unbearably bright screen - was one of the reasons I didn't take Office 2013.

Outlook 2010 at least is READABLE !! so I'll probably stick with it - pity as I LIKED OE.

the account color is disabled in Windows live mail and I can't show the items in groups - however thanks for the suggestion - at least it does "what it says on the tin" but too "garish" with that bright white on my nice huge monitor. !!

cheers

I understand, Jimbo. It is a bit harsh. Maybe another Jimbo, but I seem to recall you querying this on an MSDN site a long time ago - with no sensible answer!

Hi there

I think it was me !!! anyway nos success with OE -- couldn't get OE to work with Wine, Thunderbird was "semi-passable" - didn't seem to be able to customize the emails to show in groups like Outlook -- and the fonts took a HUGE amount of playing around with - they required serious work on "mega-De-uglification".

So I'll stick with Outlook 2010 == does what I need and as I run it on a VM I don't have to worry about end of support (which I think lasts until 2020 anyway !!).

@ARC1020

You forgot these as well !!!!!

Full IMAP Gmail - Seven

I used OE for many years
Then used Foxmail 7.0.93 for

preview in 1 click pdf, xls, doc, jpg INSIDE the mail window (like Outlook)... etc
fast search in 2 click for all mails from one sender
open close folders pane in 1 click
delayed sending
select which attachments to download
change accounts order
change folders order
different ringtone for each account
automatic different template for each account /send/reply/forward
many macro but very important for automatic replies or mails : %cursor%

but recently I had some problems with gmail synchro

So I bought or tried all
EM
Posbox
The Bat pro
Mailbird
last Foxmail 7.2
Outlook
Thunderbird beta 30

No one has the ALL «old» Foxmail functions
I use Thunderbird 30 but I do not like it very much (except quick folders move addon)

So if you know one I buy immediatly

I actually like Libre office and am putting it on all xpired office 2003 clients that do not need Outlook or do not do heavy usage of office programs

I think WLM looks so similar to Outlook Express. It does have a calendar on it too

Yeah, outlook express was "Express" all right. I'm using Outlook 2013 but rarely, mostly web-mail now. 3 main accounts are always signed in so I get notifications when mail arrives. Outlook became all but mail, the other crap not needed at all.
Could not find anything else good and to my satisfaction.
