Sorry I couldn't help better. :(

Try running this batch file.
It runs dism & sfc.

After downloading it, right click it & click Properties & Unblock it.

Then right click it & choose Run as administrator.

When dism finishes, press the space bar to get sfc going.

These scans might help.

If David's last suggestion doesn't work, then you can simply associate the two main filetypes (htm and html) with Opera directly.

Screenshot (42).png

I'm hoping Opera will show up there when you select a filetype and click "change program" to browse for it. Note that I have altered my settings to use Firefox portable so it can be done.

Good luck,

my2cents

UPDATE: I see that David had already provided the same view so I yield to his previous recommendation.

Wow... nobody is really helping with this problem.

I have the same issue in that I can't get http/https protocols to associate with anything but IE, and I'm running Superbird. This is really irritating.

Is there some way to add a program, any program, especially when not installed under Program Files, to the list of Registered Default programs so that I can set defaults for it?

The best I can do is point you to Opera Mail:

Download Opera Mail - Opera Software
What the ...

Are you serious? I ask about a browser issue and you direct me to a mail client? Are you serious?!?

I'm really beginning to think I wasted my time joining this site, as upon further browsing, the place seems to be, well, shall we say lacking in the amount of expertise I will require for any real help? I'll be looking for other sites that can assist me, as I doubt this place has the technical know how to do very much at this point. Users are too busy being pushers of Opera, etc. No thanks.

I'm browsing on Windows 7 right now. I just wanted to ask, when you click a link and it asks through which browser you want to open, isn't there an option to "select from a list of installed programs"?

The best I can do is point you to Opera Mail:

Download Opera Mail - Opera Software
What the ...

Are you serious? I ask about a browser issue and you direct me to a mail client? Are you serious?!?

I'm really beginning to think I wasted my time joining this site, as upon further browsing, the place seems to be, well, shall we say lacking in the amount of expertise I will require for any real help? I'll be looking for other sites that can assist me, as I doubt this place has the technical know how to do very much at this point. Users are too busy being pushers of Opera, etc. No thanks.

You said:

Is there some way to add a program, any program, especially when not installed under Program Files, to the list of Registered Default programs so that I can set defaults for it?

Opera mail fits that description. :)

Good luck getting anymore help anywhere.

Maybe you can find help here:
