    Getting mail to the desktop?

I like to use the desktop on my laptop rather than the tiles. I had no problem putting the browser on the desktop, but am a loss for putting the mail program there; there doesn't seem to be an executable file in the mail directory. Any suggestions?

I have always been happy with Live Mail. Maybe more advanced users have extra requirements, but it does every conceivable function that I require.

I use the free Windows Live Mail client which is part of Windows Essentials. Windows Essentials: Other Programs - Microsoft Windows

EDIT - davehc is faster than me. I'll leave the picture though so you can see what it looks like

Is there any way to close mail with the mouse, or is it necessary to type windows+D?

    Brilliant, glad I could help

click on the top of the screen and drag the application window down will close the application. If you are just looking to get back to your desktop, you can put your mouse to the top left of the screen and it will show your last used application. click the window that little window that pops up

or you can use alt + tab to scroll through your open applications.

this might give you some ideas as well:

Apps - Close in Windows 8
    cheers,
