Internet works but not browser or email

I recently encountered a problem where my browsers (IE and Firefox) and email stopped working. I know I have an internet connection - I can ping Google for example. And I have other laptops that are working fine. The weird thing is when I reboot I can sometimes use the browser or email but after a couple of minutes it stops again (stuck in waiting for google.com). This has been going on for a week now. I tried restoring from earlier but still doesn't work. I've tried resetting DNS and WINSOCK and TCP - makes no difference. I'm running Norton and Malwarebytes. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    *cough* Norton *cough*

They make a nice tool to remove it.

Yes, I know it has never caused problems before and yes, I know it is a fantastic piece of software.

    /sarcasm off

Ok to check IE desktop settings too, for Connections | LAN. Take all check boxes away.

I'd already done the LAN check boxes which didn't help. However removing Norton appears to have done the trick! Thanks! Out of curiosity, what, if any, anti virus software should I use instead?

I am with you. I wonder how much the CableCo's are paying Symantec, to keep Norton alive.

AVG, Avast, or just Windows Defender will work. I do not use a firewall on the computers in our household, due to the TP-Link TL-R600VPN router that we have, has a decent firewall on it.

It really depends on what features you want, and how intense you want it to be looking and telling you when something is going on.

I recently did a fresh install of Windows 8 on a separate partition. It works perfectly - except that none of the internet browsers are working properly and most of the metro apps that involve grabbing data from the internet stay stuck at the loading screen. Internet Explorer 10 can't go online...
