I have a fairly new Dell with windows 8.1 on it. Internet explorer stopped working all of a sudden the other day. No warning at all. When I open the desktop version, nothing happens at all. No tab, no pageload, nothing.I can click the gear and only file, safety, and compatibility view settings are available. I have reset internet explorer settings to no avail through internet options. ?I have scanned with a few different tools and nothing has fixed it. Also, the window outline colors have turned to a reddish pink. What is this?!?

What tools? Do you suspect you might have contracted a malware infection? If so, go here for guided assistance: Am I Infected? | PC Help Forum

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried EEK, Malwarebytes, Defender, NPE. EEK failed with an exception. Everything else "finished and cleaned". There is an active subscription to Macafee installed as well. More symptoms lead me to believe it is HDD physical error or damage. Random things that malware might not target ya know what I mean?

Not to be stubborn, but does that mean something didn't finish clean? Now, this is just my2cents (as my username implies) but I would have to believe that a corrupted hard drive would be causing you more issue than you reported. So, if the chkdsk is hanging, why not try the simple scan and see if that hangs as well:

Also, please tell us where you are trying to run chkdsk from (ie, recovery options, etc).

Hey no worries I'm a stubborn b*****d myself. I just mean I have never seen one or any particular anti malware program fully "clean" everything that exists on a single pc. When you say simple scan do you mean sfc? I did it from the command prompt in safe mode and in regular mode, as admin as well. It came up with an error saying some files could not be repaired and logging was not enabled. CHKDSK is run from CMD as well but has to restart to lock the drive.

Agreed! And I assume none of them can effectively fix the damage left behind (ie registry corruption) after the malware is removed.

No. In explorer, right click your C drive and go to properties> select the tools tab and click the button as circled. Same picture as previously shown:

WOW chkdsk finally finished after the restart. It was stuck at 10% for 4 hours and suddenly finished! I will run error checking from inside now as you instructed.

OK, but probably no need to do that if chkdsk didn't find any corruption.

Forgot to mention Firefox and chrome work fine....sorry. Also, I reset the IE settings in Internet options almost first thing to no avail.

You can try unticking it in add/remove Windows Features, rebooting, and retick it again:

I'm still a bit confused because you said nothing happens when you try to open it but then you say you were able to reset all valuse to default. FYI, one other forum member just went through 6 pages of back and forth responses on a similar IE issue and the end result (recommendation) was this:

How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 8 and 8.1 without Losing Anything

BTW, Did this just start? Do you have a System Restore point available to try?

I tried that option a few times to no avail either. I was able to go into internet options on its own and reset the settings once I had IE11 enabled again as shown in your picture. Its weird that that is an option but it is and if it had worked then it would have been good. I tried system restores but they all failed with the same error. I didn't try a repair install because I dont have the media to do it with.

Refreshed and everything is working. Now to fully update and see if it stays that way.

That's wonderful news! Glad you got it working!
