Mail app and email attachments (opening) a little help?

Getting to grips with windows 8.1 on a new laptop having been used to XP Pro and Outlook Express

    yep, steep learing curve.........

Anyway, I have a real bugbear with the mail app. e.g. I receive an email with an attachment, I click on attachment to open it, it opens in desktop (why?), once attachment has been read/filed or whatever and I close/delet it I'm stranded on the desktop (again why?), I then have to go through several button pushes (start/Mail app/mail account/open email) just to get back to where I was when I opened the email originally

Surely there must be a simpler solution, am I missing something, is there a way to set it up so that when the attachment is closed it takes you straight back to where you were in the mail app?

Or is this just one of those Windows8 'querks'......

    Any help much appreciated

    Paul

It will depend what attachments you are opening and what applications you have to open the file.

For example if you where sent a Word Document the only application you have to read .doc is Microsoft word which is a desktop application it will have to open in the desktop. The file accusation to the different file types are going to dictate what application opens when you try and view an attachment.

On the flip side if you are sent a picture then the metro screen app could launch the photo for you.

That is a couple of thoughts i would type a lot more but i have to jump of my computer quickly. IF no one else has answered the rest by the time i have got internet again I will answer more.

    all the best
    Cheers,
    Harry

    Thanks for that Harry,

I accept certain attachments have to open in desktop, so, any thoughts guys about my second gripe regarding getting you back to where you started easily?

    Paul.

not a problem, IF you are on a desktop/ laptop (keyboard and mouse) put your mouse in to the top left corner of the desktop it will show you the last metro application you had open.

If you are on a tablet device then you should be able to swipe in the metro application from the left hand side of the screen

Also if you use Alt + Tab you can cycle through applications quickly.

if you use windows 8.1 you can use snap view so you can have your desktop on one side of the screen and a metro app on the other. It would look something like this:

I've only been using Windows 8 for a short time. Most things are running well, but this is frustrating. I use Outlook for email. When I open an attachment, the only way I can close it is to go back to the start menu and then back to Outlook. Surely there is an easier way to get back to Outlook.
Can any one tell me how to save photo attachments received via the mail app in Windows 8 ?
