cant save documents from emails

Real simple. I have 8.1 I open Gmail. there I open a PDF doc. Pr a pic. Or a Microsoft word doc. I see the doc. On the bottom of my tablet screen I see the option of open with... or download. and some triangle thing. it offers apps to open with (none ate adobe or Ms word). none are the adobe I have. It wants me to go to the store. when I tap download nothing happens. when I hit the triangle. It wants me to go to the store again.

I received this for Xmas. my last windows was xp. not liking the change.

Is this a Pro or RT tablet?

Not sure I know the diff. it is a Sony Vaio tablet on the back it has the sticker saying windows 8. I went online for the free 8.1 app.
P.s. I read your response in my Gmail account however, when I went to click on the link to respond. it again wanted me to go to the store. I went online, logged in to give this response.

I'll lean more towards a Pro, but we want to be sure. There should a model number on it. Please post that. Did a manual come with? Is this one of the "Duo" series > combination laptop/tablet?

It is a Sony svt11213cxb. It's a tablet with a wireless keyboard and a pen. there is a PDF manual under the vaio care screen. that's where I got this info from. nothing mentions pro or rt.

Thanks. Are you using IE11 or other browser to view Gmail? If IE, is it the Modern/Metro or desktop version?

I did follow the directions when I did the update before. The way I use the gmail is by having the app. In the charm style windows. I don't think its the ie11
