    Hello monk,

Please be more specific. I am sorry, but what is an online account other than Hotmail? Hotmail is an online email account that Microsoft uses (along with outlook.com, live.com, etc) for many of their products.

You can use it to log into a computer that has been set up to use it. And you cannot use other email providers for this service. However, if you are speaking about outlook or something else, that is a different matter. I just need some clarity. Let me know!

he uses something that was on win 7 that used POP or POP3. is there a way to change it to smtp so that it works with windows 8?
and the account is online.no which is not a microsoft account. and he has a hotmail.no account wich works to send from and to with.
he set up the computer with the online.no account and we went through the 2 step verification but it didnt activate. then he added a second mail account or alias and using mail app he can send from the hotmail.no but not the online.no account.
or can this be easily changed by calling his isp that has his online.no account to change it for him?(the ones that has his email server-POP,POP3)

    Monk,

I'm sorry, I am still not understanding. All email is online. And there are two major types of email, POP3 and IMAP. What are you trying to get to work with windows 8? I'll explain.

Windows 8 is the operating system. It is what your computer runs on. You start it up, and it says windows 8.
Internet explorer (or another browser) is how you connect to the internet. Often times, email is accessed from an internet browser. There are many different email providers. Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, and Yahoo are all very popular email providers.
Some programs can pull email from the internet to your computer, such as Outlook. So you open outlook, and receive your email.
Programs like Outlook can receive mail from most email providers.

However, Windows 8 has an option of using a Microsoft account, such as live.com or Hotmail.com, to access your user account for the computer. So you have the option to have a local, non-Microsoft account, or a Microsoft account. In this situation, gmail or any other email provider that is not Microsoft will not work for accessing your computer user account.

If you have something completely different that you are having trouble with, please explain in detail what the problem is. Are you trying to go to gmail online, and you are not being connected? How so? What is preventing you from connecting? Are there any errors? Any pop-ups? What browser are you using? Are you using a program like outlook, or just through an internet browser? I apologize for the confusion, and hope I am able to figure this out with you. Talk to you later

If it worked with windows 7, chances are it works with windows 8. He may just be setting it up incorrectly.
He is using the windows mail app? What questions is he being asked that he isn't understanding?

He needs to go to File>Options>Email Accounts...
Click "ADD", select "Email Account, click Next.
Type in Email Address, Password, make sure 'remember password' is checked. enter email address.
Check 'Manually Configure Server Settings', then click Next.
Select either POP or IMAP. IMAP if you want to 'borrow' messages from the server to access on your computer, or POP if you want to 'pull' messages off the server to your computer.
You will need the server address and outgoing server address. Check boxes whether SSL is required or not. Also check Authentication.

    Hope this helps

last sunday he had a accident. the cable for the charger for his old laptop got around his leg and he was checking something on the oven that was cooking and he dragged it off the table and crushed the screen. i opened it up and recovered his "username" files. and then we ordered a new laptop with windows 8. he set it up on his own username and mail account on the same user login. however, the mail that he used on windows 7 is either POP or POP3. and we went through the 2 step vrification to activate the mail account for his user\name\login. it wont send or recieve mail. he is using the mail app in win8. the only thing he can recieve and send mails with is the hotmail part of the mail. the outlook part of it greeted him with "welcome to use outlook "log in here"" no signs of mails anywhere. so we started up another old laptop he had with vista and tried that mail and it can both recieve and send. it is apparently POP3. ok, answer time - not doing gmail, can connect with hotmail (secondary mail address), POP or IMAP settings doesnt work from (works)vista - (works)win7 to (doesnt work only hotmail works)win8, error when trying to set up POP3 manually btw there is only a url address bar for the mail server wich neither of us have, he said he was gonna call the isp wich have this mail service to see if they know, if not, he will reassign hotmail to main mail address, google chrome, if the mail app in win8 is outlook then yes, cause the hotmail.no address is automatically assigned. windows mail app for win 7 yes. Telenor Online - Telenor currently in the hands of Mobiltelefon, Bredbånd, Mobilt Bredbånd og Telefoni - Privat - Telenor wich is his main mail address provider. wich we are trying to make work in win 8.

    Hey Monk,

Ah, I think some of the confusion on my part is that I didn't realize you were from another country than I. The free live essentials mail app is the same for windows 7 and 8. Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office, and cost money to purchase. But the mail app is free.

Did he do the same exact steps he did when he signed in to Vista or Windows 7, as he did on his Windows 8?

I got the mail app for windows 8 just now, and I'll upload a few pics. He may have to select 'manually configure server settings'. Here are the pictures:

    Go to Email Accounts...

    Add Email Account...

Enter credentials. Select 'manually configure server settings' if it isn't accepted...

Is he absolutely sure that he is using the same settings on all computers? He can check to make sure by going to his email accounts and viewing their properties.

Have him double check. Re-enter everything slowly and surely.

If it still doesn't work, I'm not positive on a solution. You may have to contact Microsoft.

could this be the same as login info being the mail address he uses normally for all his things not work in the mail app included in win8? his login username mail address is the same as he uses normally to get all his mail. could that be the problem its not working and he needs the windows live mail app? and not the win 8 mail app?

This is a good idea, because I am not sure what the mail server is for that email provider. You may have to call them.

I am not sure what is meant by this statement, please kindly explain it better for me.

I forget if Windows 8 came with a mail app. It did, right? If so, he may be able to use either the app, or the live essentials download. They both should work the same. He can try to see if essentials works better for him, but this is optional.

His would look like this one, yes?:
