How to set default download locations

Greetings. Hope everybody had a good new years. Just wondering if anybody knows how to set a particular folder as the default location for a specific file type, or, in the event that's not possible, just set it as the default location for all file types. Mainly I'm interested in setting one specific folder as default for every time I right click on an image and choose save as. I'm tired of having to browse through to my images folder each and every time. It didn't used to do this until I upgraded to windows 8.1 so I'm not sure if it's a windows issue or an internet explorer issue. Any light you can shed on options for a solution are highly appreciated. I don't really use "libraries" as there are only two folders I use for downloads. One is for images. The other is for everything else. I don't mind having to browse to my downloads folder, just not the images folder as that is generally what I download the most since I work with graphics a lot. Thanks.

Not exactly sure I'm clear what you want, but if it's concerning Internet Explorer, than in Internet Explorer, Tools, View Downloads, click Options, choose a location....

Yeah, that works for executables, but for some reason images keep defaulting to This PC > Pictures. And I am using internet explorer 11. Thanks.

Yeah for those I'm not sure you can specify, but than again I haven't looked that hard. I also don't remember that being a feature in Windows 7, unless I'm missing something ?

Bass, thanks for the info, but as I said, it doesn't work for images. If you click on a download link, then yes, it will open up a dialog with the folder you specified, however, if let's say, you are browsing google images, and right click an image to save it, the dialog that comes up 99% of the time seems to be windows 8 pictures folder. Occasionally it will actually open a dialog to the last folder I browsed into and saved an image into, but almost always it's the pictures folder. There used to be an option somewhere to set the "save as" default location to "last folder used", so that once you had saved a file type into that folder, say, a .jpg or .png, it went to the last place you saved a file of that type. Since windows 8 or internet explorer 11, not sure which is the culprit, it doesn't do that. Thanks.

I can select any image, whether in a browser or on my system, right click it and a window pops up and then I just tell it where I want it to go. I use the "save image as" from the menu that pops up when I right click on an image.

Have you tried a different browser to save and image and see if that menu is different then the menu in IE?

AH HA.....In IE 11 it's "save target as" or "save picture as"....and using both I can tell it where to save it to. Try resetting IE to default settings.

Reset Internet Explorer settings

This works for IE 9, 10 and 11.......I use option 3. I like to decide where each download is saved.

something must have changed yours ,I go to google images and right click and can choose to put it where ever I want ,

if I were you I would change the IE download location to the one you want the picture to go to, giving that is mostly what you download

Ok guys, you're apparently not understanding me, or I'm not making myself clear. Yes, when I right click on an image and select "save as" a dialog does open allowing me to browse to the folder where I want to save it, so Bass, you're with me so far, however, at this point the initial location to "save as" for any particular file should already be determined in that dialog but in my case I have to then browse through levels of folders to put it where it belongs. And sygnus, your method only works if it's a downloadable link that you just click on. This doesn't work for non-hyperlinked images that are just sitting there on a page or in google images. You have to right click and then select "save as" to download images.

That's not what he's saying. The problem is he doesn't want it to work like that; instead of "hunting" for a location, he simply wants to click the file and it automatically goes to the location of his choice. I'm not sure that level of customization exists for his needs....

@ darkbreeze,

Yes, I get it, I'm not sure that level of customization exists through IE like that. And I don't remember it being that way under Windows 7 in IE10. On the other hand I didn't look that hard. And usually when I download images, I do the same and just browse to the desktop of other locations deemed necessary.

Now... what "might" of happened in the old (IE10) browser is it "remembered" your last location and opened it by default, but...

Well, if windows defaults to this "pictures" under "this pc", it seems there should be a way to set that location someplace else. There has to be a setting to designate that location otherwise windows would have no idea where to save anything. Just can't find the registry entry, internet explorer setting, or folder option.

Well unfortunately I don't have that answer for you. Could it be done through the registry, probably; where, I don't know.

Hi, DarkBreeze. Did you ever figure out how to save images to your preferred folder without having to browse each time? I save a lot of images a month. I don't like saving anything anywhere in my library folder - just because. It's a pain to right click on an image - go to "save as" and then have to browse for the folder you want to save it in every single time. Does anyone know how to set your default folder (outside of "library") for right clicking on images? I looked thru the tools and internet options in IE, but didn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks!
Rhonda

PS
I'm not talking about downloading to a specific folder. I know how to do that.
