    How safe is JavaScript really?

I'm wondering if there are that many security risks involved with JavaScript? I know its different than Java, but it has me wondering if it is a big risk or not, can't find too much information online about it.

well all browsers have some javascript built into it. Java script downloaded by its self is an absolute mess and not needed unless you play a lot of online games. i haven't had it on my pc in three years.

Javascript is not something you download.

You control it in Internet Options.
Set your security options like in the pictures & you will be safe.

Thanks @David Bailey very informative, I'm going to set IE settings to that, even though I mainly use Opera/Firefox.

To the best of my knowledge Internet Options affect any browser you are using.

I might have had a memory lapse when I posted that.
I tested it by disabling animations in web pages.
It worked in IE but not Opera.
    Sorry for the confusion.
I hate it when I mess up.

Even in Opera Settings JavaScript is considered OK:
