How to open Chrome without going into a new window?

When I open Chrome on my desktop, Windows 8 opens up a new window to view Chrome. How can I open chrome like how Windows 7 does it? I want to be able to open Chrome and Microsoft Word and view them both side by side.

Not sure if that's what you want :
Right click on taskbar, Select Show windows side by side

If chrome is launched metro style as an app and you don't see the taskbar, you can use Alt + Tab.

Chrome can operate as a normal windows program and also as a phone-style version. To get it to run like a normal program, in the chrome control menu (3 lines at the top right), select "Relaunch Chrome on the desktop".
