Why don't browser Back Buttons use the Cache?

I don't get it. I'm on a page. I click a link. I only stay on the new page for maybe 5 seconds. I click the Back Button. I get "connecting" like the word will change in 5 seconds? There's like zero efficiency. I think there should be a setting.

I'm currently on Waterfox 24.0. Pretty nice browser. But it's bizarre that something built for speed makes you wait on every Back Button press.

Hi MileAhead,

I think the real problem may be that some of the newer browsers try to use too much caching, and in some instances, they actually use a "cache ahead" technique with the assumption you may be clicking forward instead of backward; however, if this technique is deployed, you may have to click that browser back button multiple times to actually get back to the page you last visited.

I'm guessing you don't like Internet Explorer. It works well with the backspace key.

You guess correctly. Although if it does this right then I'll score one for IE out of fairness. Only time I had a system totally hosed by online malware was a BHO. FF or Opera or anything not IE based and they couldn't have gotten me to such an extent that the system would not boot.

Plus it just took forever to be multi-tabbed. I used shells that used IE engine... but I still think ActiveX is way too dangerous unless you are in a shielded corporate environment and need to use it to get work out.

I just tried FF portable 25.0 beta 1. It still shows "connecting" on back button press. But it seems snappier than Waterfox 24.0. Also it now seems to download quickly like Waterfox. I think Waterfox needs a 24.1 because there are definite hangs making me wait to click a drop down on the extensions and other stuff that indicates deadlock or race conditions. Also FF portable loads a hell of a lot faster it seems.

Using Opera 12.16 here (old presto engine) and the cache system is actually great... The browser never connects when using back/forward or visiting any recent link for that matter. You can change the time it udpates almost anything (from documents, to images, plugins content) from 1 minute to 1 week lol. Really nice for fast browsing.
