Hi,
I've posted this question in the answers.microsoft forum, but so far..nobody has given me a 'valid' solution on how to correct my issue. My posted question:

I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 pro edition, which includes internet explorer 11. I still can't access my gmail account, I've tried the 'fixes' that I've seen in the community, but the only way I can get gmail to load in the 'desktop' version is to select the 'html' version. Does anyone have any idea's on what else I can try ?
I've tried several suggestions to get gmail to load correctly, but so far ..it still doesn't load like it did while I had windows 8 pro / IE 10 installed on my laptop. Lately..I've just been using google chrome browser, things are 'normal' with it.
Thanks,
David

Hi there
try changing / disabling the "Enhanced security feature" in IE11 in Security tab and also viewing in Compatibility mode.

Cheers

Hi Davy49,

Are we talking about two separate issues here? If so, IE 11 work fine on 8.1 for me when accessing gmail via the web; however, here are two important settings that you might want to consider changing:

Turn off the "Use Microsoft compatibility lists." (Go to Tools> Compatibility Settings and uncheck).
Turn off Smart Screen Filtering:

Retest access

For desktop access, I am not sure what email client you are using but I use Thunderbird and I use the POP3 access method. The nice thing about Thunderbird is that "it knows" how to automatically configure for gmail, so all you need to do is specify your gmail user name, password, and specify POP3 access during setup and you are done. Works like a top!

Good luck.

Hi there

Another idea if you have MS Office.

This works fine for me -- I'm using OUTLOOK 2010 with the settings as required in the GMAIL set up notes. I'm also using IMAP - no probs with it at all.

However OUTLOOK doesn't use a browser client so there isn't any "Web mail" type problem. For me OUTLOOK is fine since it's compatible with work clients etc - If you HAVE Ms OFFICE it's worth looking at using it even for GMAIL.

Here's a link -- Skip the wretched commercial though - I'm afraid more and more sites are copying that type of habit - some "Free downloads" even make you watch a VIDEO before accessing the download !!!!!! - This one doesn't have one though just click the X - there's no video !!!!.

How to setup an Outlook Gmail account from a Google Gmail email address

(I have a few "dummy" email accounts for buying things from amazon etc - so I don't get bombarded with adverts to buy other products that these sites spew out copiously -- I can just delete the entire emails without even opening them -- doing it from Outlook is IMO the best way of managing multiple email accounts).

Cheers

Dear jimbo45,
You said:
" Hi there

I did as you suggested, I disabled the "Protected Mode" option under the security tab, also un-checked " use microsoft comparability lists" in the settings area. After doing so..of course I received the notice that changing the
"Protected Mode" setting would put my computer at risk, I closed IE 11, then re-started it, after doing so, I was able to access gmail. I signed out, and tried to log back in..and then it just 'hung' as before. Windows 8.1 / IE 11 is somewhat 'flakey' in my opinion !
Thanks,
David

Hi there
@Davy49

I'm logged on - bored today - company server is down so twiddling my thumbs on Home Internet !!!!.

If you have Ms Office try Outlook - set up in my previous post.

Actually I've found IE11 OK -- it doesn't rely on Flash so some sites might have a problem with it but on the whole it works fine. If it IS a browser problem then another browser say Chrome should work - however I don't like "Webmail" type of email clients - that's just my view though.

Cheers

Hi Davy49,

Did you also try disabling the smartscreen filter? You may also need to clear all IE11 cache and reboot after doing so:

A few other things come to mind. I have my protection services enabled and I can still access gmail perfectly; however, you might want to try adding google.com and gmail.com as "trusted sites." This will allow you to keep protection services enabled and treat those two sites as exceptions. The other thing I have done is deleted the 3 default accelerators which are useless for my purposes. Just bear in mid that miy IE11 access to gmnail works perfectly. Good luck.

Dear my2cents,
I surely wasn't trying to ignore you in my previous post, In your latest reply to me..you said :
" Did you also try disabling the smartscreen filter? You may also need to clear all IE11 cache and reboot after doing so." I checked my settings for the smartscreen filter, it's NOT enabled, and I did clear the 'temporary internet files' in that area. Right now..I wish I had not upgraded to windows 8.1 pro edition.
Thanks,
David

One other thing to consider. Along with adding those two websites as trusted exceptions. I also decided to use Bing as my primary search provider becaues IE11 was having so many issues related to Google. Also, because Firfox 24 is my browser of choice, I had no issues in doing so:

Dear TonyB,
For the last several days..I've been using google chrome, as you mentioned, at least gmail works correctly with it. As I mentioned previously, at least right now I wish I'd never upgraded to windows 8.1.

This is a "School boys stuff" from Google and MS, whenever I asked for a solution in MS community forums and Google support forum, I got the suggestions either to try a different browser or use a different mail provider, but I have categorically refused their suggestions and they gave in, sorted the problem, Gmail works as it should be, me=1 tech support=0:D

I'd be a happy camper if I could just get gmail to load correctly in internet explorer 11 desktop version. As I stated previously, it worked normally before I upgraded to 8.1.

Dear David B.,
I changed the two setting you suggested, at least now..part of the gmail page loads correctly, but 'parts' of it are still missing. Such as the logout button, and the additional info. that normally shows on the left hand side of the page, chat , etc. .
