Win 8.1 and Internet Explorer - System Crashing

After upgrading my OS to Win 8.1 Pro, (upgraded from 8.0) when using Explorer it keeps locking up and hangs the entire machine - the mouse freezes and the entire thing locks up, the only way to recover is to reboot the PC.

Looking at it, it looks like it might be caused by pop ups from the page I am viewing at the time - If I use IE it locks up on the initial page, if I switch to Chrome the point where IE locks up is the same point that Chrome opens a second window within the main window.

I cannot access anything, cannot get task manager or switch programs, nothing - I have to power off and restart.

    Any ideas?

Have you checked Event Viewer in the Control Panel for identified errors and codes ?

And to clarify, not just the browser, but the entire system freezes ?

I can no longer find things like Event Viewer after upgrading to Win 8.1 - The search facility has turned to absolute junk! It no longer brings up Apps or data on the system, instead it almost invarably does a Bing search on the internet - i.e. If I type in Event Viewer in the search box, it brings up results from articles on the internet, absolutely useless - Win 8.0 was fine, it found anything related on the PC. So now I will try and find event viewer and see if I can find more info.

As far as the crash goes - Yes, it is the entire system, nothing works, the whole thing just freezes, mouse keyboard, everything - you cannot do CTRL/ALT/DEL etc.

It locks up, all the fans go off at full speed and that is it - the only way to get it going again is to power it off and back on.

UPDATE!!! - OK I found the Event Log, and there appear to be two major errors that keep occuring, the first error is:

CAPI2, ID 513 - Addlegacydriverfiles unable to back up image of binary microsoft link layer discovery protocol.

The second error which appears more often is System:

SChannel Event ID 36888 - A Fatal alert was generated and sent to remote endpoint. This may result in the termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 10, The windows SChannel error state is 1203

If you have any ideas, I would be most greatful! (The first error looks like the network adapter, I am going to reinstall that and see what happens.

SChannel errors are common on Win8. You may google the specific error to find more info.

Also, go to the website of your system's manufacturer. There will be info on upgrading to 8.1 to include driver downloads.

Thanks Torre, already downloaded all the latest drivers.

I found a topic on here that recommended disabling the logging by tweaking the registry settings which I have done - basically Win no longer logs the error.

The more I look at it though, the more it seems like an Nvidia Graphics driver problem. (It only does this in IE11, not Chrome or Firefox)

In Win 8.0, i used to get the odd error message "Nvidia Driver has stopped working....and has recovered from this error, since loading up Win 8.1, I updated the Nvidia driver and have never had that error again, however, I have started to get the PC lock up.

It locked up again today, but this time it was far more BRUTAL! instead of just locking everything and freezing, the entire screen turned bright red with all sorts of lines and boxes and distortions, again the only way to resolve it was to reset and reboot - I checked the Win Error log and all it said was "suffered from an unexpected shutdown - fatal error"

Unfortunately, for some reason I cannot seem to roll back my current Nvidia drivers to 310.XX which seemed to work OK, they refuse to install and tell me they are not compatible (obviously not true as I used them previously)

Headache! I like IE (must be one of the few) I like the interface and grew up with it - I can never get used to Chrome - I hate it, and Firefox seems just bloated!

Shame really, hope Nvidia or Microsoft find a fix. Maybe my graphics card is getting a bit long in the tooth - Gigabyte Nvidia GTX460 1GB O/C....do you think an newer model might be in order?

Have you installed update KB2901549 already?

I noticed it popping up in Windows Update today and it should improve the reliability of IE11 in Windows 8.1.

I also had some weird things happening with IE11 just after upgrading to Win8.1Pro, but after a day or two, it fixed itself.

Thank you, no I didn't notice the update - I will go away and make sure it is installed - Thank you again! Appreciated.

Now here we go again with this terrible search on 8.1 - normally (win 8) all you need to do is type "WIN" in the search box and you would immediately be prompted to go to Windows Update... not so in 8.1! (I just searched for the update - KB2901549 is not available to me, nor is it in my update history???)

I type in "Windows update" and it brings up this....whatever this might be....

"cc_2013_141535.reg" REG Entries 133KB...... if you click on it it warns you about tampering with the registry!

I have no idea what it is but it is certainly not Windows update, the new search is absolutely terrible!

I am seriously considering going back to my Win 8.0 Pro X64, this 8.1 seems just a complete mess - At least with 8 I knew where I was - besides, the only way I can get 8.1 is as an Upgrade rather than a fresh install, which is probably part of the problems - At least with Win 8 I can get a clean installation and not have the system messed around with - maybe it would be worth doing a complete reinstall of Win 8, then before loading any other software, go and do the update to Win 8.1??? Any ideas?

It always feels like a compromise when you update rather than do a fresh install of the entire OS

Yep, Windows 8.1 Search is a lot different. I don't like it either.

You can get to Windows Update in two ways.

    1st method:
    <Win>-x
    Control Panel
    Windows Update

    2nd method:
    <Win>-Q
    [search] Windows Update

You need to wait until Windows 8.1 shows the results. Don't press Return/Enter or else it opens the Bing Search.

Hope you will find the update there. I found it on two of my PC's, but my Windows 8.1 Media Center PC didn't receive the update yet, and can't find it either.

PS: the cc_...reg file is the backup file of your registry when you use CCleaner to clean the registry.

    Hi Rudy,
I eventually found the update via the control panel. The search has basically become a BING tool, it is useless, it finds virtually nothing on you machine, why did they have to change something that basically worked well.

OK thanks for the heads up regarding CCleaner..that makes sense, but why on earth Win 8.1 would bring that up as a result for "windows update" is beyond me.

Looking at the 8.1, I think I was happier with 8.0, I got around the start screen problems and the lock screen, Win 8 was working pretty nicely and pretty stable, 8.1 has just messed it all up like rat shit!

Still not found the same update that you have, my latest are simply a Windows Defender update and one for the Canon printer I have...maybe tomorrow?

Based on my needs, I share this view. I ran both the 8.1 preview and RTM for a few days and decided to return to Win8.

I read that Win9 preview may be released in Fall 2014.
