Windows Mail does not keep options set

I hope I'm not in the wrong place... I've tried to set up the Purge button from the Layout option and it won't work. The reason I was trying that is that I cannot get the option for emptying the deleted items folder upon exiting to work. I set the option under Advanced/Maintenance to do that, but it won't stay set. As soon as Windows Mail goes even to the Inbox, the option is gone and the Deleted items folder still has the same deleted items in it after the program is closed. As far as the Purge button goes, that never shows up after the option is set. I don't need it anyway if I can get the option to 'empty the Deleted Items folder upon exit' to work. I've had this problem before in 7, but eventually got it to work.
    What's the solution, folks?
    thanks to all.

What version of wlm are you using ? I have my wlm to purge all deleted emails upon close and it works every time.
FYI, below is the screen shot of the wlm version that I have installed in my PC.

EDIT: BTW, did you click on Apply from the Advanced Tab after you set the option ?

I am not sure if OP is talking about Windows Mail since Windows Mail will not work with Windows 8 unless you do some tweaking and it involves in copying some DLL file from Windows Vista.

Well, he might come back and explain. But I was thinking "mail application", which I do not use? Most certain is that he is not talking about Live Mail, as it has no feature called "purge", of which I am aware.

Yup, the op is talking about Windows Mail, not Live Mail. Tweaking is what I did for sure. I had the problem in Windows 7, too, but kept fooling with it and eventually it worked right. Windows Calendar even works in Windows 8.1 via the button on the menu bar in Windows Mail. I'll keep playing with it like I did before and it just might get on the right track and work like it should. If anyone else has found the cure, let me know. Thanks to all and keep up the good work.

I'm sure it would work, Robin. I just am not one who goes for the idea of storing info on the net, which is what Windows Live Mail does. The thing with Windows Mail not emptying the Deleted items folder is just an inconvenience. I can empty it on purpose, of course, so I do that. I like using stationery with W.M. too, and I don't think W.L.M. does that. :-)

what do you think Windows Mail does? it does the same thing- if you sign up for a live account, it stores on the net but if if you use your regular isp it does not- you can delete it from the server
and yes you can use stationary on WLM, I have it on mine, they only thing you cannot do is put a picture on the settings part but you can put in a link for a picture
Also you can custominze WLM much better than the Windows mail app on 8
