I have found the Microsoft site to be not very helpful. They seemed to have "canned" responses and do not address each problem individually.

I would consider doing the reset, though you may have to redo your extensions light Google Earth.

Also, what is your AV ? You may consider doing a scan with a free online scanner like Kaspersky.com or Malwarebytes.org.
I have looked at the event log and seen nothing suspicious. I will try to remember to look there immediately after the warning pops up, and see if something stands out from the rest.

I will look again at the reset.

Use MS Defender, and have no indication anything is wrong. Also use Spybot. Allowing an internet application to scan my computer is outside of my tolerance for risk.

Events remain in the log for 7 days.

Understand the concern, but Kaspersky and Malwarebytes are well-known. You can also download either AV on a trial basis.

After nearly 24 hours without seeing the error message it popped up when I closed Explorer normally yesterday at about 5:40 PM. I was able to find a single error message which is displayed below. I followed the MS links back and it said it should be accompanied by a second error message which has more detail. All I got was this one error message.

I'm starting to think this thing is a Windows 8/IE10 bug. Seems to be racing code between the normal shutdown routine and the error detection code. Could it be because I'm running a fairly fast CPU and SSD?
