Hello, Barbee. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

So you're saying that you had Windows Live Mail while using Vista? I'm assuming by the title of your thread that you had a Roadrunner pop account which cannot be configured in the Windows Mail Store app. Microsoft has shied from pop due to what I think was security reasons.

There is a workaround. However, I'm on my phone so I can't get to it until I get to my PC. There is also the option of installing Windows Live Mail in 8.

I'll be at my PC within the hour or someone else may come long to answer to this.

Hang in there. And again, welcome. :)

In the work around you will only be able to read your email from the POP3 account in the Modern/Metro Store Mail. You'll have to use Outlook.com online or a separate program like Outlook to reply to and send emails.

If you decide to go that route, the work around explanation is quite lengthy, so before I do that may I ask if you still have a Live (Outlook.com) account?

Also besides the option of Windows Live Mail, would you happen to have Outlook, which is a program of Office?

As the OP talking about Windows live Mail, I would add that I have had no problems, (using Live Mail since Vista), in reproducing my pop3 accounts. But barbee, sorry to sound basic, but you do realise you will have to download and install the mail portion of Live Essentials?

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
Well, Dave, that is a good point. :thumb:

This is all soooo confusing. I hate reading and responding to mail from roadrunner.com. I want a mail program. What is the easiest way and why do I need a Microsoft account to do anything? I don't recall having to do that on vista?

I am going to be posting here a lot because I just can't understand Win8 it is so drastically different. I feel like taking the computer back and trying to buy one with win7. I have that on my laptop.

Admittedly it does stretch ones patience.Windows 8 does he have more of a learning curve than transitions from other OSs, but not impossible to learn. New technology, new items introduced, and items in different places due to the introduction of the new touch-centric UI. I find it just as easy to use with mouse and keyboard.

What we see in 8 is more of MS's services included which one can deploy, use, or omit.

As much as I know about the Windows Mail app and other Store apps I'm sorry to report that I have no idea if one can use it without a Oulook.com/Live/Hotmail/MS account. Hopefully someone else could answer that question.

I've had a Live (now Outlook.com) account since it's introduction and use that account to sign into my 8 and 8.1. I also used WLM in Vista and 7, but I'm enjoying the email app in 8, so personally no need for that.

This question has come up before. I will do more research on it. I'm wanting to know myself.

All I can say is hang in there. I'm sure the answer will come.

I'm attempting to keep this as simple as possible for you so you can make the best decision for yourself, however I must say a lot of tech has changed and been added since Vista.

That said > This is my conclusion unless someone knows different. One does not need an MS account (which includes Hotmail, Live, and/or Outlook.com) to use the Windows 8/8.1 Mail app as explained here on the MS Windows site: Do I need to sign in with a Microsoft account to use Windows Live Mail? - Sign in with a Microsoft account to use Windows Live Mail. Of course, they are promoting there services there, of which one does not need to use. Personally I find them convenient. Because I have a MS account, I can add what they call "alias accounts" (including POP) via Outlook.com so to be able to use in the 8 Mail app.

One can add any IMAP or EAS account such as those listed by opening the Windows Mail app > Charms bar > Settings > Accounts > Add an account. Unfortunately the app does not support POP and, I think, for good reasons. One is that POP deletes mail from the server once it has been retrieved whereas IMAP and EAS keeps a copy on the server for to retrieve again by the same device/PC or another Device/PC. I would imagine some companies like POP for it relieves server space whereas other companies offer the service for customer convenience.

So to advise you with the options you have as I see it.

1) I explained the work around above in post #3 and will explain how to configure that if you'd like. Keep in mind that only receives mail > not send using the 8 Mail app.

2) Get an Outlook.com account to configure and use your Roadrunner account as alias.

3) Download the WLM portion of Windows Live Essentials which supports POP as you've been using.

4) Get Office Outlook which I believe supports POP.

5) Find another 3rd party program that does so.

Here is the link to Windows Live Essentials if you decide to go that route: Windows Essentials: Other Programs - Microsoft Windows. The install program gives you the choice of what programs you would desire to install as it goes along.

Of course, I don't know it all and there may be other options that someone else may have. Please let us know if you need further help.

Edit:

I forgot to add this page of which may be of interest to you, especially to contact your email provider: Using email accounts over POP on Windows 8 and Windows RT
