Internet options problems

I am new to Windows 8 and am having problems.

The first one is that Windows 8 keeps hijacking my Hotmail and sending me to Outlook. I put hotmail as my home page, and it ignores it and goes to Outlook. I type in Hotmail.com, and it goes to outlook. I copy the ULR, and it goes to outlook. The only way I can read my email is to use another browser.

My second problem is that, even though I've checked on block popups, I'm deluged with popups, including some that are really viruses, such as one telling me that my Explorer 10 is outdated.

Thanks.

The first one is that Windows 8 keeps hijacking my Hotmail and sending me to Outlook.

Same for me as well using IE10. However, I can still login using my hotmail address and it takes me to an outlook inbox but since I do not actively use hotmail, I'm not sure what that means. Other browsers are OK as you described.

My second problem is that, even though I've checked on block popups, I'm deluged with popups, including some that are really viruses, such as one telling me that my Explorer 10 is outdated.

If you already know you have a virus, then run a full malware scan to try and isolate and/or remove it.
Good luck.

Hi David,

I don't think this is a hijack issue because mine works the same way. I really think its more like an MS browser redirect that works as designed. However, I am sure that MS is using a script to do a browser check and MS is sending IE10 users to outlook.com and still allowing the other non-MS browsers to land at hotmail.com proper. Cheers!

Hotmail.com is being redirected as the OP described. See redirect test results:

Well, it is a problem for me, because I can't get into my Hotmail account, unless I use another browser.

That's interesting because I found that Firefox redirects as well (which is a contradiction to my original test). Moreover, a Redirect 302 is hard-coded into the server (for the domain hotmail.com), and having used it frequently as a webmaster to redirect all traffic, I am amazed that you can still "get-around" that hard coding with an alternative web browser. With that said, can you do another test to confirm your other browser still lands at hotmail.com? And if so, could you please give us the browser name and version that is capable of avoiding this hard-coded redirect?

Just a followup comment. So, I attempted to land at hotmail.com (proper) and I was redirected to outlook.com (no surprise). I was able to login using my hotmail username and password. While sitting there I sent an email (using Thunderbird) to my hotmail account and it popped up in my outlook account. Unfortunately, I was unable to confirm that all previous hotmail emails had been migrated to the new outlook account because I never actively used it (eg, had zero emails in the old hotmail account).

Hope this helps the OP a bit.

What I meant was, it is nothing to worry about because it is not caused by a virus.
Then,if caused by a virus, it would be something to worry about.

I did not mean to belittle the annoyance it causes you.
Sometimes I express myself poorly. :(
