Solved IE Metro vs. Desktop / Where is the address window?

I just got a Windows 8 laptop and won't be able to change it to Win 7 until the Win 7 DVD (finally) arrives. So in the mean time I am trying to get some use out of Win 8 - not an easy task!

I am trying to use IE but am unable to obtain the area in which I can enter a URL. I had such an area long enough to type in "Google News" and did get there. But then I selected a CBS web page on the plane crash in San Francisco. That web page manages to occupy the entire screen and there is no place to enter a URL. (No display of the current URL either.) A few times something I have done with the track pad seems to cause the URL window to appear but then it disappears before I am able to take advantage of it. If I return to the "start page" (if that's what it is called) and double click on the IE icon (in an attempt to open a new browser window) I just end up right back at the CBS page. So how do I get that area into which I can enter a URL?

In researching this problem I have seen references to two versions of IE - the Metro version and the Desktop version. I am not sure which one is frustrating me, but maybe if I could just get to the other one it would be more cooperative. (Probably not, but it's worth a try!)

Thanks, Bob

The address windows can be accessed by right clicking or Win + Z
Using the metro IE > Win + Z

If you wish to use Internet Explorer on the desktop only (for all links) and the web,
It can be set to default always to the desktop. Open Internet Options > Programs tab > set the defaults (as in the screenshot)

Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop > Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop
