Hi there
I see that Ms has now decided to support IE on Windows 7 - and there is no Enterprise preview of W8.1.

Microsoft promises IE11 on Windows 7 - ComputerworldUK.com

(click original tab to get rid of annoying commercial -- people who advertise like this cause REAL irritation to users - I note these offenders and go out of my way NEVER to use their products).

This rather suggests that Ms seems to have given up on trying to make corporations / large businesses switch to W8 and that W7 is likely to be around for a VERY long time (will it become as others have suggested in the past the "New XP"). Support is guaranteed until 2020 at least by which time I shall have certainly long since retired from the business of having anything to do with computers -- I'll probably be running a Bar or a Garden Center and become a "bog standard user" just using a machine for accounts / taxes etc.

There are a few features that I DO like in W8 - such as Virtual ISO mounting and the very useful WINDOWS TO GO feature (enterprise version only though) but workwise it's still W7 for me at the moment.

I've been running W8 for some while now but I can't see it going anywhere in the direction I'd like it to --and I'm not a Metro user in any shape or form so I've gone back to running my main Laptop and desktop on W7 again while just keeping W8 / W8.1 on virtual machines just in case anything useful emerges.

I DID give W8 every possible chance and while W8.1 has gone a little in the right direction it's still not for me -- and now that IE11 is going to be made available for W7 I have no hesitation in reverting back.

That's my view -- and I'm sure I'm not alone -- W8 was an interesting trial, W8.1 obviously an admission by Ms that some things were royally hosed up but they need to UNHOSE stuff PDQ (bring out W9 quickly for Enterprise for example) OTHERWISE THEY ARE IN BIG TROUBLE ON THE WINDOWS FRONT.

IE 11 seems good -- although some online services still report "Unsupported Browser" !!!! and the fact that Ms is now fixing it for W7 shows the way the market feels currently.

Cheers
jimbo

That's quite a sudden change of heart and mind, Jimbo, although I'll have to agree with you to a certain extent.

One of my first thoughts or question I had after booting up Windows 8 RP for the first time was if business would ever deploy it. After getting to learn 8 a bit, listening to you IT Pros here, and generally bad press, I knew it was going to be an uphill battle for Microsoft. Keep in mind that MS has an ace in the hole > 7, as you've pointed out.

Here's a good article that I think sums it up: http://magenic.com/Portfolio/WhitePapers/DeployingWindows8BusinessApps

By nearly all accounts, Windows 8 represents a fundamental shift in Microsoft’s client computing strategy. This is probably the largest shift since Windows 95, which was the first time that users started natively into Windows rather than launching from DOS.

That shift to Windows 95 impacted business software development and deployment in some important ways. The shift to the new Windows Runtime (WinRT) programming platform in Windows 8 will also have similarly substantial implications.

We all pretty much knew that MS Is targeting a certain market that those "other two" are winning at > "Mobile Consumption Consumers". The only saving grace for 8 for business so far as I can see is custom RT apps tailored-written specific to a business. But, I've noticed to get you Pros to look at a Modern RT Store app is an uphill battle. Generally, the first thing you Pros want to do is to bypass the Modern/Metro side of the OS. Not all, but, generally speaking, most of you think it's unproductive crap. Is that fair to say?

Have you really learned 8 without learning the Modern RT app side of it? Have you at least tried the MS Mail and People apps? At least for awhile? Are these even fair questions to ask?

All in all, MS is caught between a rock and a hard place > Those "other two", bad press, and you Pros. Perhaps MS is making a mistake after all. Perhaps they are to blame. Perhaps they should take a different direction.

Just my thoughts in a sea of the billions. :)
