Mail App update using Gmail - no mail older than 2 weeks

    Hi,

I was using my Gmail account with the Windows 8 Mail App and it was all working fine until I updated it through the store yesterday (I haven't updated it before so I don't know what version of the app I am now using). Today when I try and access my folders I just getting a message saying 'no messages from the last 2 weeks', meaning I cannot access all those useful emails that I have kept on purpose without using gmail through chrome. I have looked through the settings and cannot find if there is a way to change this - is there? Or can I un-install the update and just go back to using the old version, and if so, how would I do this.

    Thanks,

    Hannah

Hi Hannah, welcome to the Eight Forums.

When in Windows Mail App, open Settings (press Win + i), select Accounts:

Open the drop down menu Download email from and select Any time:

By default email is downloaded only from the last two weeks.

    Hi,
Another issue... I have both Hotmail and Gmail on my mail app, and I used to have gmail as the 'primary' email account, but now hotmail has become the default and I can't find where to change it back!
    Thanks,
    Hannah

Could you please explain a bit more what you mean? Windows 8 Mail App does not have a primary or default account in a traditional sense; if your user account on Windows is set to log in with an email account, that email is listed first on accounts list and all additional accounts alphabetically after it, or if you are using a local account to log in to Windows 8 the first email account set up is listed first and additional accounts alphabetically after it.

However, it is irrelevant in which order the accounts are listed. For instance when New message button is clicked the Mail App always uses the active account (account currently selected) as the sender address, instead of the default (primary) sender address as traditional mail clients do (Windows Live Mail, Office Outlook etc.).

Well before I updated the mail app, it would always open onto my gmail account. Now when I open the mail app, it opens onto my hotmail account (which i don't use and only have on there as i had to use a microsoft account on the computer). This means that all the mail notifications i get when i first power on my laptop are for my hotmail account, and i have to actually open the app and switch to my gmail account now in order to check if i have any messages. This problem has only recently started.

Each account has the option to turn notifications on or off (see the screenshot below). If notifications are enabled for each account, Mail App notifies you whenever any of your accounts receives new mail.

In your case it might be a good thing to do to turn Hotmail notifications off and Gmail on, this way you would only get notified when you receive mail on your Gmail account.
