How to email photo attachments from desktop?

If I select a photo from 'Pictures' in File Explorer', right click & select 'Send to: Mail recipient', Mail opens up but only the title of the photo is shown as an attachment, no picture. Even if I click on the title nothing happens. This is the same in 'Outlook' or 'Gmail'. Any advice as to what's wrong? I can send a picture attachment ok by clicking on the 'paperclip' in 'Mail' which then takes me to 'Photos' but I would like to send it from the File Explorer. Thanks.

There should be an "insert image" option :

    I'll check Gmail too.

I'm still using the OLD Compose structure.

The new one is probably what you are using.

    Modern Gmail : Insert pictures

    Step One-- Click Compose.

    Step 4 & 5 :

Click the diagonal up arrow at the top right AFTER you insert a picture to undock the Compose window.

    You can then Maximize it.

    This is screwed up.
If you undock & Maximize before adding pictures, the + sign disappears if you try to hover on it.

That's why I use the old version.

To get the old compose back see picture :

The new compose is really messed up.

You can also click the + sign next to paperclip to get the link for attachments.

You just post the screen shot & when you hover the cursor on the posted picture & left click it will get bigger.
3 clicks usually makes it full size.

Example (Put cursor on it & click) :

There are 3 tutorials on adding screen shots in my signature.
    Reading them would probably help.

I've only been using Windows 8 for a short time. Most things are running well, but this is frustrating. I use Outlook for email. When I open an attachment, the only way I can close it is to go back to the start menu and then back to Outlook. Surely there is an easier way to get back to Outlook.
