Using Outlook.com as mail server for custom domains, free!

Here's one that might interest people who have their own email domains, a small (<50) number of users, and would like to use Microsoft's mail servers...

I use my own domain with Google docs and they do free email for me. It also works very well.

It’s an interesting idea for anyone who wants to use a free mail server. Although you can pick up a simple mailbox account for about £9 per year, so they are relatively inexpensive anyway. Not sure whether to think of it as a free mail server for your domain name, or your own domain name for your Outlook.com account.

One thing to note is that Outlook.com doesn’t support IMAP. Therefore, if you wanted to sync mail between multiple devices, all the mail clients would need to support Exchange ActiveSync. Also you don’t have a catch all mail address, but it may be possible to use mail forwarding for that.
