    For what you want to accomplish, I highly recommend Sandboxie. It's a lightweight program and doesn't require too much knowledge of how to operate it.

    May I ask, I can install Norton's Security Suite for free as a Comcast customer.
    Would you use that over Win 8 with Defender and the native firewall or stick with MS?

    Personally, I strongly recommend you to use Windows Defender. Norton's Security Suite is bloated and does the same exact thing as Windows Defender and Firewall.

    The best thing you can do to protect yourself is not to download random things and practice simple safe browsing habits. I've been using Windows Defender for roughly a year and a half. I haven't had any issues.
