After enabling Windows Mail, setting default for .eml

So I got Windows Mail working and pretty happy as I was able to retrieve about 10 years of messages. But, pointers went bad and some messages are not available. The only way to get them is to go directly to the folder where they are saved, and open the message itself -- they're all there. So, I would do that and re-save, but I can't open .eml files. Windows 8 doesn't allow me to specify Windows Mail as a default program for any file type. I'm pretty sure I had to edit the registry to get Windows Mail to fully work with Windows 7 but can't recall what all changes need to happen, or if Windows 8 is just going to be more limited.

Hi Femmdange, welcome to the Eight Forums.

If you have Microsoft Office Outlook installed, it can open EML files. A nice free alternative is eM Client 5 Free, basically a 30 day trial version of their commercial Pro version which you can continue to use after the trial period as a free version with some reduced functionality.

Yep, excellent choice...I use eM Client 5 myself on my laptop, the free version of it. So, the only differecne I've found with free vs paid is the number of email accounts you can have, with free just 2 accounts. There is a comparison chart of the two on the site. It works great, but I prefer Outlook from my Office 2010, which I use on my desktop.

Thanks for the advice. I do have Outlook but can't get it to open the .eml files either. Windows mail is the default to open them but it just launches the program, not opening the mail item itself.

I may wind up downloading this e-mail program you mentioned, so appreciate the info on that. I mean, it's not like Windows Mail wasn't a little buggy -- it was just simple and easy. For that matter, I could use Outlook, but I find the interface slightly more cumbersome than I want.

    • Right click an EML file
    • Select Open with > Choose default program

    • Select Use this app for all .eml files
    • Select Outlook (desktop)

    • If Outlook is not visible, click More options link and it should appear on the list

Windows assigns EML files now to Outlook and you can in the future open them simply by double clicking.
