I'd rather use and look at this. Windows 8 Mail app is awesome IMO.

I guess it's largely a question of "chacun a son gout" and I couldn't possibly comment on the foregoing.

I have made up my mind now and am going with Thunderbird for all my non- gmail mail. (I hope that's permitted on this forum)

[QUOTE=Greybeard;217521]@robinb9. I get your point but I suspect that on most recent machines MS are trying to block all but Win8 mail progs. This machine is only a few weeks old with oem win8 on board which *might* have something to do with it?

No WLM 2011 works perfectly in Windows 8, I have it running on 3 windows 8 pro machines with not a problem at all. WLM 2012 has a bug in it via the sending of group contacts but other than that it works fine on windows 8 machines also

I'll scratch around for a bit and come back in due course - maybe after a good night's sleep
windows live mail you get from going to Windows Live Essentials Windows Essentials - Download Windows Live Essentials

    It is NOT an APP

You use internet explorer to download it
When you double click it will ask you if you want a custom install, or reg install. You pick custom. Then you click only Windows Live Mail and that will be what is installed
It opens in the desktop app once done

I use Live Mail on my 7 side, but Ok. To each their own. Most of the world lives in free States. Very few monarchies left to rule. Nazism is hopefully dying out. Communism also. I'm sure you get my gist.

Personally the Modern mail app sucked as did most others back in the RP days. That's where I started using 8. Two editions later and with multiple app and OS updates they are getting to be much better with stability and added options. LOL! I remember writing an important long email draft back in the RP days that disappeared on me that made my blood boil! Ugh! Where did it go?!! I'm sure everyone knows the feeling.

I learned through the years not to trust new OSs or even new programs and now Modern apps. That's why I dual boot for a time until they work the kinks out. I continue to run my business on my 7 side, but I find myself more nowadays on my 8 side and increasingly learning that. I'll admit that 8 is a bigger learning curve, especially learning the Modern apps, than past OSs, but not as much as I think people make it out to be.

Another big factor for me is that I need to invest into updating my Office 2000 Pro and some construction estimating programs. I'll have to shell out some big bucks, but rightfully so. It's about time. They served me well. That'll all go on my 8 side of course. When that happens, along with my increasing confidence of my OEM 8 Pro final fresh install, my 7 will be deleted. I'm estimating mid summer.

Also keep in mind that 8 rocks on my older Acer more so than 7. It's like a new machine. So now there's no need for me to shell out bucks for a new one.

Anywho, back to the Modern apps. I've honestly been patient and persevered with them in attempting to learn and use them. As I mentioned, they are increasingly more stable and options are added with updates. Personally I'm finding them to be more resourceful, quicker to open, eye pleasing, and easier to use. But, hey, that's me. My main apps are Windows Mail, People app, Calendar app, and the Photo app. They're all tied together and meshed more so than programs in 7. I can see where MS is heading with this system. Into their cloud as most of them are attracting us to. There was some of this in 7, but more so in 8. I find it very convenient to sign into my 8 with my MS account. I'm automatically signed into all. One can use as much of the cloud as one desires. It continues to be a choice.

The Windows 8 Mail app has come a long way since its early beginnings. Too bad first impressions were bad for many.
