Hello

To change my email client do I click on control panel>default programs>associate a file type>mail to?

My current one is WLM but I don't know what happens when I click "Change program"!

Will I have a choice like Windows Outlook.com?

**The reason I am asking is because if I click on 'set your default programs' as I usually do and highlight a program to set as default, no other mail is there - just WLM. I have Gmail, 2 Live accounts, Comcast account, and WLM all in my WLM desk account. I was hoping to make the Outlook.com application the email client but maybe it cannot be done.
I have not synchronized and do not know if it is necessary to get Outlook.com to appear on the default program page.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you
Peter

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question or not but I have a new laptop with Windows 8 and there are those panes and one was for Mail. I selected it and it asked me to enter my username and password. I wasn't sure if it would work but I put in my hotmail information and it worked. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a way to back of out that and there are other people that use this laptop using the same login information. When you select the Mail pane, it automatically goes to my email inbox. Is there a way to reset it so there is no personal info again? I don't really know what I am doing but I do know I don't want a bunch of folks able to read my personal email. I have looked everywhere I know to look.

I would really appreciate any help you can provide.

Jill

Open the Mail app, Win+C->Settings->Accounts then click on the mail account you want to remove, on the bottom, click on remove account

Open the Mail app. Then bring up the "Settings Charm" , eg. with the <WindowsKey> + <I> key combination.

Then select Accounts. Click on your account and there is a option at the bottom to "Remove all Accounts" (assuming yours is the only one there).

Hello

You can also go via control panel>default programs>Set your default programs.

Whereas the way you mention starts from a list of file types and lets you choose a program, the "Set your default programs" method gives you a list of programs and lets you choose a file type. (More or less, anyway.)

Outlook.com is really a website rather than a client program though. It's not much different to hotmail.com in what it does, and not to be confused with the Outlook software within MS Office. The Windows 8 App on the Start Screen is labelled as Mail within Control Panel and it should appear unless you've removed it.

I don't know what browser you use. I am using Firefox and this is how you set to open the web base email Client. Select "Use Others..." to set up your outlook.com. See screen shot

I assume other browsers should have this option also.

Hope this helps !!!

mail to

Before I advance, I have two questions;

1-if I click on 'mail to' and then 'change program' is this reversible or am I stuck with something new?

2-is Outlook.com an app that can be used as the email default client or not?

I am curious what some of you use as the email client.

Btw, I should have said I use MSIE 10 and have Win 8 Pro.

Thank you
Peter

1-if I click on 'mail to' and then 'change program' is this reversible or am I stuck with something new?
Of course it's reversible. In the screen shot. When you click on mailto link, the default is 'Pick an app' and this will pop up a list of Web base mail programs for you to select. If you set to 'Gmail' then it will redirect to the sign on screen for Gmail without asking you. For outlook.com the sign on screen would be:
https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa...1&owasuffix=owa%2f&id=64855&snsc=1&cbcxt=mail
So when you select "Use other...", it will popup a little text windows the you just put the above link in there.

2-is Outlook.com an app that can be used as the email default client or not?

While surfing the net and if you click on Mailto: link then whatever you set in your browser, it just redirects you to the sign on screen and yes, it is effectively your default email client.

I am curious what some of you use as the email client.
I have been using desktop email client, Outlook express (Windows 98), live mail (Vista), Windows Live Mail (Win 7 & 8). What I like about desktop email client is I can organize my mail messages, can store them in a different Hard Drive so if my Windows OS get messed up, my emails are untouched, can read my old mails offline, more secured because my sign on & password are not stored in some form of cookies that malware can steal it, no ads showing etc...

#1-Reversable.Just pick something else.

I use Opera email as email client.I set it up to use my Gmail account.

#2- I do believe your browser itself needs its own email like Opera.Outlook.com is web-based,(someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I have attached a tutorial on setting up Opera as email so you can right click & send by email.
You don't need to USE Opera for this to work.
You just set it up for Email & use IE 10 as usual.
Read the HTML file after unzipping.

I found FF to be very easy - after MSIE 10 I could not believe how easy it was. My questions were more aimed at the explorer which I like to use. I have WLM which gathers all my accounts I one place and serves and the client so I am all right for now. I thought I read that Outlook.com was the preferred client but it does not appear on my default programs page with MSIE 10. My wife also wants to stick with MS.
It is an application and not a program so it is uncertain whether it can be used as a desktop client.
Thank you all for your help.
I hate to seem stubborn but I am trying to use explorer and stick with MS for continuity among other things. Sea Monkey actually provides all I need too but I would like to stick with MS.
I cannot force something to be tht won't.

**Has anyone ever tried to at least see if Outlook.com is available with Win 8 by looking at the default program page and also "file association" and click "change programs" to see what is there?? I would love to hear from you if you do!!

I think you both for your help but I am afraid I am a little slow on your instructions. First, I don't know what Win+C->Settings is referring to. I also don't understand the settings charm reference. I am including a screen shot of the pane on my Windows desktop so we are all talking about the same thing.

DesktopMailPane.jpg

If you would be a little more specific on how to access these methods, I would greatly appreciate it. I did find one please called Windows Credentials that referenced mail and I removed it but it didn't seem to have any impact on this Mail pane. It displayed my Hotmail/Outlook account immediately.

@penjab
Is there a way to reset it so there is no personal info again? I don't really know what I am doing but I do know I don't want a bunch of folks able to read my personal email. I have looked everywhere I know to look.

Open the Mail app, Win+C->Settings->Accounts then click on the mail account you want to remove, on the bottom, click on remove account
