Thanks for the response. I have purchased Outlook and Office before, but Windows 8 does not support it. I am finding out how limited and poor the People and new Outlook are. I see no function for creating new folders in the mail view, no function for building address books, etc. So, I either need to purchase the 2013 version of Outlook and Office ($209), load my old version and hope it works or find an alternative. I will look into your recommendations. You know, when you buy a laptop for $650, you don'tr expect to have to drop another couple hundred bucks to get it to actually function. No wonder people love Apple.

Sisley there's something very screwy here. I had XP & Outlook Express on my old laptop. I transferred Contacts, Documents, Music, Photos (but not my Address book) over to my new notebook with Win8. I didn't have to buy any new Office to open a new Outlook email service. In fact I have a free OpenOffice for my word processing needs. It's true on 2 other threads we haven't figured out a way to transfer our email Contacts over to People. But please try what I suggested in a prior post: Open the People app then the Charmsbar, select Settings, Accounts, Add an account, select Outlook, & then fill in your existing email address & the password that you used to open your previous email acct.. It will then ask for Domain, etc. See how far you get. Windows 8 must support Outlook, otherwise it wouldn't be on the list of email companies. If it doesn't work then I don't know what to suggest.
As an alternative to above: open the Mail app & do the same thing as you do with the People app, that even has an 'Other' listed for an email acct.

Part of the problem is naming. In the old Windows, there was a big difference in Outlook Express and Outlook. To complicate things further, MS has changed their HotMail email service to what you get with Windows 8 is a email program called Outlook....not the great contact organizer/email address book program called Outlook. To get that, I have to buy the new 2013 version of Outlook. Also, since this new laptop doesn't come loaded with MS Office, I now have to buy that too. Once again, this is why people hate Microsoft....when you buy a product loaded with MS software, they shouldn't be trial versions. Total B.S.

You keep calling the Mail app Outlook. It is not Outlook -- it's Mail. Mail is a different program entirely -- very basic with lots of issues. Not many of us care for it. Office and Outlook have always been an addition purchase, but Windows 8 will install and run earlier versions if you have one.
