New Outlook.com

Hi to all. I have often browsed this forum, and have now registered and am ready to post my 1st question.

I am on Windows 8 and use live mail on my desktop (with a Hotmail email address). Today, I followed the link in an email from Microsoft to update to Outlook.com. In a very short time (think seconds), I was informed that the upgrade had completed and received an email from the team headed "welcome to your new inbox".

However, Live mail is what comes up when I click on the desktop icon, which is still labelled Live mail.

So what has happened to Outlook? What have I done wrong? or is there something that I have yet to do.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Keith

you did nothing wrong ,if you use live mail with hotmail you can now set up live mail to use both ,you just need to add new act in live mail and set it up to open you oultook.com acct . I use live mail to download email for 5 different acct ,2 hotmail 1 outlook.com and 2 from i ISP acct .you can still use www.outlook.com to check both hotmail and outlook.com accts
to setup outlook.com in live mail ,just open live mail go to accounts tab at the top ,click email ,and just add you outlook.com address and password and follow the prompts to continue , good luck any questions just ask

Thanks for your replies exscentric and caperjack.

From reading threads on other forums relating to the new Outlook.com, I got the impression that Outlook is replacing Live mail, in fact the email I received from Microsoft a couple of weeks ago said just that. One or two posters (presumably in the States), reported that on switching on their pc's they found that Live mail had been replaced by Outlook. Microsoft are supposed to be rolling this out region by region and in the end the user has no choice (other than to use a non-Microsoft email client).

So I presume I have to go on the internet to Outlook.com and log-in?

Keith

ps. I have just gone to Outlook.com (via IE10), and it takes me straight into my account. All the mail and folders that are under my Hotmail account are there but nothing that I had in a Tiscali account is included! So it appears to have only recognised the Hotmail account!

that the first i heard that microsoft was getting rid of live mail ,as i said i use live mail for all my email providers ,i open live mail and it check for mail in all 5 accts at once . i never go to the email sites in my browser unless I'm away from home

as for your Tiscali account if its not a web based email acct but a ISP acct it will not show up in outlook .www outlook com is not a replacement for windows live mail,it just a new microsoft web based email for the future ,like cloud computing

Hi Caperjack.

I have perhaps not properly understood Microsoft's intention when I read in their email "Your Hotmail inbox will be automatically upgraded to Outlook.com soon, or you can quickly upgrade today by clicking the button above". I interpreted this to mean a replacement for Live mail.

So if Live Mail is to continue and Hotmail addresses to remain valid, I probably don't need Outlook!

you keep the same email address. but instead of using the Hotmail website/interface, you're now using the outlook.com website/interface.

live mail is a computer based email aplication ,outlook.com and hotmail are web based email .
as said already you can setup windows live mail to access your web based acct like hotmail

Keith

exactly ,you don't need a new outlook.com acct ,dirtyvu is correct ,just use you hotmail acct info on outlook.com

if you use name@Hotmail.com you can still use it when signing into outlook.com
if you use name@live.com you can still use it when signing into outlook.com
If you use name@msn.com you can still use it when signing into outlook.com

You can still use all the same email addresses and configurations for windows live mail and it will go to outlook.com

Nothing has changed except webmail sign in, and the old look on the web browser has changed

Microsoft has stated you do not have to make a new account once you log into outlook.com

The Store Mail app is a Modern/Metro email client app. You can configure/add any Outlook.com account plus various other accounts such as seen here:

Mail App Accounts Snip.PNG

Open the Mail app > Charms bar > Settings > Accounts > Add an account.

Microsoft accounts - Windows tutorial

It is limited to SMTP accounts only. It will not accept POP accounts.

Not sure about the Calendar, but I know Google contacts can be configured to show in the People app for I had an Android phone up to the first of the year in which I did so. If they changed it since then I wouldn't know. I now have a Windows Phone.

We had better research this further (or some other member may know) before you make a decision. I don't want to misguide you.

I'll be back. By all means please feel free to comment if need be.

One thing I'd like to mention and it's one of the beauties of the system is that Mail, People, Calendar, Photos, OneDrive, and other apps all work in conjunction of one another, not only from within the apps, but also Charms.

I obtained this opening the Calendar app > Settings > Help. It seems Google stopped supporting new EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) connections in some scenarios Calendar app help - Windows Help, so this may be a problem for you, however they have a workaround: How to see your Google events in the Calendar app - Windows Help

Open Mail app > Settings > Help to get this for POP account workarounds: Using email accounts over POP on Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 - Windows Help

Like I stated, I got rid of the Android and bought a Windows phone. Personally I got sick and tired of Google world. I think their attitude stinks. Only my opinion of course.

I don't think Bill Gates works in the service department. ;)

Did you try and contact HP with your problem? They are the ones responsible to service your system since they loaded the OS on it.

BTW, what is v?
