How can I display Menu Bar in Internet Explorer & Skype?

I've just started using Win 8 on a new touch screen computer. I can't get the Menu Bar to display in Internet Explorer. (No File - Edit - Favorites - etc). The same problem with Skype, which needed to be upgraded to the latest version when I first started the computer. (No Skype - Contacts - Conversation - etc.) I've right-clicked and tapped all over the screen in IE and Skype, but the option to display the Menu Bar does not pop up. I tried the charms on the right side of the screen, to see if there are Settings I could do, but no luck. This can't be right. You need to browse your list of favorite websites. You need to be able to send a file with Skype (Conversation > Send > File). And so forth. A missing Menu Bar is probably also a problem with other programs. How do I display the Menu Bar in Internet Explorer and Skype? If I manage to see the Menu Bar, with your help, this problem will probably be solved for other programs too.

PS. If I press Alt in IE, nothing happens, no menu bar or toolbars displayed.

I assume you mean the Metro version of IE. Metro apps do not function in the same way as desktop apps. Metro apps use app bars. When you right click on the app, bars appear at the bottom and top for functionality that is specific to that app. Other functionality, like printing is handled by the common charms bar (for instance, to print, you go to charms bar->Devices and send to printer).

THe metro versions of IE and Skype do not have the full functionality of the desktop versions.

    Thanks very much.

It is a revelation to me that there are two Internet Explorer portals, one in metro and one on the desktop. I use the word "portal" because being a complete novice, I guess that there is only one IE program installed but two access points (entrances, "portals"). When I opened IE on the desktop, I could indeed press Alt followed by View > Toolbars > Menu Bar. In metro, no way to see File - Edit - Favorites - Tools - Help.

Is there only one Skype program installed which I can somehow open on the desktop as well, if I need to use the Skype menu bar? Or should I install a separate copy of Skype on the desktop? The metro interface for Skype does not allow many of the functions launched from the Skype menu bar, despite the special metro bars.

The short version of my question is: Must I install a separate copy of Skype on the desktop if I need the Skype menu bar?

Skype is not installed by default in Windows 8, you clearly installed it separately. As such, it would make sense that you have to install the desktop version separately as well.

Skype, Skydrive, Bing news and other Microsoft apps and services all came pre-installed with the Asus Win 8 computer I bought. I'll install Skype separately on the desktop and see what happens. It is clear to me that Win 8 will become clear to me in time. But the obscurity of the interface and the lack of easily-accessible help and support must be a shock to many new users. Thank goodness for this forum! I would have been lost without it.
