Opening jnlp (Java) programs

This may be an unusual request, but in W7, I could go to my school's website, open Power School and get into my Grade Book.
Now in W8, any jpnl program from Java opens the programming in Note Pad or just downloads multiple instances of "open jpnl" files and doesn't open them. With W7, I could go to Power School, tab to open Grade Book and voila! My Grade Book opened right to a student's grade.
I'm beginning to think W8 is a waste--too many bugs!
Yet, now I have to buy W7 again, as it is overwritten and destroyed in my computer by W8.
Anyone have ideas?

I am having Java problems too. heres what I know. there are 2 internet explorers the one in the modern (squares) start windows that is IE10 (used to be called Metro) and if you go to the desktop (square in lowere left) thee is a 32 bit internet Exploere 10 that is more normal The IE10 metro on the modern start will not do Java. but if you go to desktop and open IE10 it is capable of java. you will have to download Java and use Java7 updatee10 download offline file then install it close IE and restart and it whould work. (mine doesn't ) turn off your antivirus aantospy too before installing and after downloading. good luck.
