I am trying to set up Charter email on Windows 8. Does anyone know the incoming and outgoing email servers and corresponding ports to get it set up? Charter help told me to check with Microsoft, who told me to check with Charter.

What e-mail client are you using? I use Windows Live Mail, part of Live Essentials and I also use Charter.

It will auto setup the servers. Just put in your e-mail and password and away it goes.

Thanks for the reply! I normally enter my mail through a link on the charter home page. When I do this, I need to enter a password AND my zip code...I wonder if that's a problem.

I had no problem setting up my gmail account in Windows 8...it was immediate. It just doesn't seem to want to take the charter.net email.

Just so I am clear, there is a mail icon in Windows 8 startup...that's where I am trying to set this up. It's certainly not the end of the world if I can't get it set up in there. :)

That Mail App won't do POP accounts like Charter. That's why it won't work. That is why I use Live Mail.

I'm not surprised Charter referred to MS and vice versa. I have Charter also. Fortunately I have very little trouble with them and I don't use my Charter email account, so I rarely have to deal with the imbeciles they hire as tier one support. I've learned that choosing the "disconnect" option when I first call generally gets me to a better tier of support when I do actually have issues.

But then I've been a steady source of income for them since I've never been late paying them in 7 plus years. Kinda gets their attention when you ask them to look at your payment record and they see that.

Uncanny how paying ones bills can give one so much clout.

Please refer to the answer at this forum thread:

Configuring Charter email in Windows 8 - Microsoft Community

It is important for everyone to understand that the Windows 8 "Metro" mail app is, in fact, a mobile email client. Thus, the email settings must be entered for Charter's mobile email settings.

My father-in-law spend hours on the phone with three different support help desks. When looking for an answer, it dawned on me that Windows 8 was intended for tablets (read: mobile devices). The light bulb clicked on, and was rather bright! In two minutes, I had his email flowing.

I hope this finds its way around the net and helps resolve this little PITA!

Thanks,
Dan

yeah, if you want to use the Windows 8 email app with POP, then you need to use the workaround:

create an outlook.com account. send your pop mail (to outlook.com). then add the outlook.com account to the Windows 8 email app. voila. all your charter.net email or verizon.net email or your nyc.rr.com or whatever email to the Windows 8 email app. Yeah, it sucks to use a workaround but if you want to use that app...

One nice thing about Charter's email servers, is that the mobile site is an IMAP server. I've not used POP3 on Charter in over a year.

honestly, I'm not a fan of IMAP. I know that's the preferred method for many but for me, it's just too resource intensive. more resource intensive than email should be. on my old PCs, I definitely avoid it.
