windows 8 ships with two different versions of IE10, one for start screen and one for desktop.

for desktop IE10, use charms-search, highlights apps and type explorer into search box.

click on file explorer on left side of screen, scroll down to your OS drive, click program files, click internet explorer folder, then find iexplorer.exe file, right click and pin to start menu and/or pin to desktop taskbar.
go now either to your new IE10 icon on your start screen on on the desktop taskbar, click it and now you are in IE10 desktop version.

an easy way to make the IE tile launch the desktop version instead of the metro version is to make another browser (like firefox) the default browser.

same thing for the the new chrome v23. enable the chrome in windows 8 mode (i guess that's what metro is called now). then set chrome as the default browser so that it can launch inside metro. if chrome is not the default browser, it will automatically launch on the desktop, regardless of the windows 8 mode setting. same for IE, it has to be the default browser to launch the metro version. if it's not the default browser, it'll launch the desktop version.
