Hi, I upgraded from W7 to W8 last Thursday and found that Thunderbird functioned exactly as before.
What version are you running? Mine is 16.0.1. perhaps you could check and download that version and try again. I know that before I upgraded to W8 I ran the compatibility program and it said Thunderbird would operate alright.
    Cheers.

Thunderbird functions OK from the desktop but I'm unable to see it when all the apps are displayed. Want to add it as a tile but can't figure out how to do that. Thunderbird is up to date as is Win8.

Hi again, Thunderbird will not function as an 'App'; however you can place a 'Tile' for it in 'Start Screen' (as you can for anything) as follows:
Open Start Screen and right click on any App or Tile. This opens the bar along the base of the Start Screen and on the right hand corner see 'All Apps' - left click on this. This takes you to the All Apps Screen where ALL of your programs installed on your computer are displayed as Apps or Tiles. Find the Tile required - Thunderbird - now right click on it and once again on the 'Bar' at base of screen you will see a number of options which include: Pin to Start Screen/Pin to Taskbar etc and if they are already on the Start Screen it will show Unpin from Start Screen. If I may suggest to you, it is well worth a little time spent in the All Apps Screen selecting and Pinning to the Start Screen all the Tiles you use frequently. Then once they are in the Start Screen drag and drop them into Groups in the order you require to assist your way of working.
    Hope that helps.
    Regards.
    Yorky.

This is one way I'm annoyed with W8's Start screen. I wish W8 would take a programs Systray notification (like Thunderbird's little envelope icon) and put the graphic in the Start Tile for the program. On the old start, you saw the systray all the time, now you don't, so it's hard to keep up with notifications.

Yorky... yes, I understand that's how to create a tile but the problem is... Thunderbird does NOT appear anywhere with all the other apps. It's only visible on the desktop. Suspect it doesn't meet Microsoft standards for Win8 so it's blocked from the app list.

If you have its Icon on the Desktop right click it and look for Pin to Start.

Hi, Can't understand that; if it's installed on your computer then it should be in 'All App'. Nevertheless, as already answered by Phoneman, you can simply right click on it's Icon on the Desktop and Pin to Start from there.
I can certainly endorse that Thunderbird does work perfectly in Windows 8. Within minutes of installing W8 I sent a message using Thunderbird just to confirm that all was well. Since then I've used it to send and collect my emails each of the 6 days since installing without any problems. However a couple of days ago it auto-updated to TB 16.0.2 and then had odd periods of 'Not Responding'. Using Save Mode i.e. in Help see Restart without Add-ons all was well again and I've since found the fault to have been the 'Suave Theme' I'd employed. I disabled that and I'm just using the 'Default Theme' and all is well. Please note I don't have any other Add-ons and if you have it may be well one or more of them giving you problems; so just try the Save Mode to check.

Just drag the Thunderbird icon shortcut from the desktop to the task bar (pin it) and run it in Desktop only....metro is for touch, mainly

I run my Gmail accounts in TB with pop3 settings....no problems

You can use the windows mail in metro and add Gmail and other accounts....but I prefer to stay with TB

If you pin a TB app on the metro it is just going to open in the desktop anyway....so desktop users are better off on the desktop

I moved my desktop from Win7 via win transfer and feel like I am running Win7....it looks the same as the win7 desktop..without a Start Button
(Start Button... really not needed, the charm on the right does just as well and actually, for the first time you click settings and Power to shut down...not "Start" to shut down)

I use basically 4 or five keyboard shortcuts that make win8 Pro user friendly

Use the Windows logo key on your keyboard, they put it there for a reason.
Windows key + D minimizes all windows, shows desktop. Again, restores the windows.
(takes you to the desktop from metro)

Windows key + E opens explorer to My Computer
Windows key + F opens search

Windows key + L locks your system
Windows key + Pause / Break opens System Information (maybe the only time you’ll ever use Pause / Brk Scrn)

Note: The Windows key + L locks your system... it is great when you go for coffee...you just enter your password when you return
(I know you could just log off...but the short cut is convenient too)

Will this help? See https://support.mozillamessaging.com...-and-windows-8 (Mozilla support site)

Thunderbird does not have a new Theme for windows 8. There is a Theme on the addon web site that is designed to give Thunderbird the look and feel of a windows 8 application. You can download the the addon from here
I can't vouch for it. Just came across this thread while researching Win8 issues b4 MS compels my upgrade from XP next year.
Win8 does not support Windows Live Mail, so I'm considering a switch to Tbird before upgrading to 8.
