Win8 Pro.
I ran update and tried to install 2 important items and on reboot I got the message "Failure configuring Windows update".
Please advise.

Refresh was dissapointing

Win8 Pro.
I've been running Win 7 Home Premium for years and decided to give Win 8 a shot and as such I ran an upgrade (non clean install) which went through perfectly.
Eventually,I ran update on Win 8 and tried to install 2 important items, but on reboot I got the message "Failure configuring Windows update".
Considering this issue I decided to run a "refresh", which was supposed to keep intact all my configuration and programs, but it didn't. The original Win 7 setup from which I upgraded to Win 8 was completely wiped out.
Luckily, I had an image backup which I restores successfully.
I'd like your expert opinions on this matter.

How about don't just go trying things, check the logs? ;) In all seriousness, if you have WU failures, the first place to look is the bottom of the WindowsUpdate.log file in the Windows directory, and then the cbs.log file(s) in the \Windows\Logs\CBS directory. Also, the event log is a great place to get info as well.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your reply.
If you could help, I'd be glad to send you the logs which I browsed a minute ago and at my level of expertise make no sense to me and as such are useless.
When installing the updates on reboot the computer stalls at 30% and I have to manually reboot after which it continues installation of the updates and fails at 67%
As there are many logs, which should I send?

You'd want to zip up and attach the \Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and \Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log files, preferably immediately after experiencing the problem.

Your CBS log shows corruption in your updates repository, and potentially disk errors:

At this point, you will want to run sfc /scannow from an elevated cmd prompt to scan your installation for errors, then run a chkdsk to check the hard disk for errors too to be safe. Afterwards, you probably want to follow 958040 to repair the update repository. If your install is only a few days old, you might want to just back up your data and do a reset.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your reply.
I went through your advice step by step including the Microsoft link and the problem persists.
What happens if I try to re-install Win 8 over the existing version as could be done with Win 7?

Dear Users,
Considering that all the proposed solutions for updating did not work, I decided to do What I use to do with Win 7 before I made it a routing to make image backups and that is "re-install Win 8" with out uninstalling the one I had on my system.
Well "what do you know", it worked like a charm and update is working perfectly.
Hope this may help others.
