    Windows Update error 80096002

I have a client who has installed Windows 8 Enterprise on a PC and when he runs Windows Update, it fails with an error code of 80096002.
I've tried looking it up, but I'm not really finding anything except for postings about trying to install a specific update. He is just trying to run Windows Update in general and getting this error.
I had him run sfc /scannow but it completed with zero errors.
I've not run into this elsewhere and am stumped at this point. I'd appreciate some suggestions as to which direction to go on this.

Hello JL, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might give OPTION TWO a try in the tutorial below to reset Windows Update to see if that may be able to help. It's the same in Windows 8 as well.

    Hope this helps,

Sorry to hear that JL. You could also try doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started to hopefully undo and fix this.

I don't think that is possible because these are brand new installs of Windows 8 with WU failing right from the start. I don't know if they are all bad installs or what. I've been working this problem by proxy and I'm trying to get access to one of them so I can examine it myself.

Is your computer under a domain? I also installed windows 8 Enterprise x86 on my computer and successfully run windows update when not included in the domain.

but when I added the computer to the domain, the error you're encountering is also what I encounter.

Yes it is in a domain. I wonder what it is in the domain join that causes it?

It's probably looking for a WSUS server on your trusted domain, not the internet.

And there is a WSUS server on the domain and there is a GPO just for the Windows 8 systems to point them to it.
