Solved Need Help. Windows 8 fails on Windows Update

I'm running my Technet version of Windows 8 Pro x64.

Windows Update never worked from the day I installed it on Aug 15th. The install was an upgrade over Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Here's the error I am getting:

WindowsUpdate_8024402F

Here's the steps I've taken to try and get it working again:

1. Ran sfc /scannow. Fixed a couple of other problems I had but not W8 Update.
2. Ran the Windows 8 Update troubleshooter. It found a problem and said it was fixed. Not so.

While there is a lot of information regarding this problem on Windows 7 and even on the W8 previews I can't find anything helpful for W8 RTM which is what I have. Remember it's legit from Technet not a leaked version.

Any help in getting W8 Update to work will be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps the problem is that Windows Update doesn't yet work with Windows 8?

I am not in any position to say that authoritatively, and I'm not where my Win8 machine is right now.

Is anyone who's running Win8 Pro x64 RTM (or another RTM version) able to use Windows Update with it?

None of the solutions worked. Aren't there any solutions geared towards Windows 8? They all seem to be for Windows7, Vista, and XP. Perhaps W8 Update is a different animal now.

I have ADMIN rights also. I've never had any checks or installs of updates according to the WU screen. As I said it never worked from day one of the install of W8.

I opened up a case number with MS. Might as well use my Technet free support. Unfortunately I was told that almost no one in support knows too much about W8 as they weren't trained on it yet. Technet/MSDN versions are still considered betas. I thought they are the same as what will be available on Oct 26.

You're mainly missing out only on Defender definitions. You can download these through Microsoft's website.
To get Update working, try resetting it.

Didn't work. I am able to get Defender updates by using the Update feature with Defender.

Eventually there will be updates for Windows 8 which is why I want to get it working.

I decided to try a reinstall of Windows 8 hoping that it would fix my WU problem. Well it didn't. But it did fix another problem I had. The new Task Manager wasn't showing my Startup Programs, now it is.

I've had similar problems where something that was there all of sudden wasn't. Running sfc /scannow fixed all these problems except for the Task Manager one.

Microsoft Support solved my problem based on another user having the exact same WU error. Somehow carrying over Office 2003 when upgrading to W8 is causing the WU error. In my case I only had the 2003 viewers installed, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I don't know if any other version besides 2003 causes the problem. MS support is opening a bug on this.

So if anyone has this problem uninstall your Office stuff and see what happens.

So, the classic problem as in 99% other cases in Windows 8 (and XP, Vista, 7) - not a clean install but upgrade, and problems are always caused by some old (or third party) program or driver.

Wish I had an option at this point to do a clean install with the upgrade version unless someone finds a way.

When W8 is released Oct 26th I'll probably buy the version that let's me do a clean install. My system does not have a lot of things on it so going with a clean install will be less of a PITA.
