Forced Windows 10 Upgrade?

There has been a horrible rumor going around for some time now and its even hitting MY game forums. Naturally, i would ignore rumors like this but then my members started to complain and started leaving due to incompatibility issues (Because i haven't updated it work with windows 10) so i've decided to turn my attention towards this issue. For the time being i've shut the forums down due to stress from the matter.I'm told people are being forced to upgrade to windows 10 ,Worse the update just pops up out of nowhere and starts downloading without being able to stop it. Is it true that windows 10 is forcing its way onto people's PCs? Of course being in the windows 7 - Windows 8.1 zone i'm not safe. Personally i do NOT want windows 10 and i'm actually anti - windows 10 right now for several reasons.

RavenV2:

Technically speaking, MS is not actually "forcing" folks' PCs to upgrade to Win10 -- if you define that as upgrading their PCs without their permission.

But, what they ARE doing is hiding the ability to refuse the update -- and folks not paying close attention go clicking away and get the update.

When the update window appears, in very small print, there is a line that says something like "show all updates". If you click that, you will then get a list of all available updates, and down near the bottom ALREADY-CHECKED is a box that says Upgrade to Windows 10. If you uncheck that, you will NOT upgrade to Win10.

But most folks are in too big a hurry to take the time to read the screen or look at the updates -- so they get updated.

And Yes, it is true that, without their knowledge or permission, MS has been downloading the material needed for the Upgrade to folks' PCs. There was serious complaining about this when MS first started and folks on low data plans saw their ceilings reached in no time!

agree that windows 10 is being forced

hi

i have just downloaded a clean install of windows 8.1 (if that is the correct terminology) i was fed up of bloat-ware on my machine. i installed windows 8.1 from a USB stick that microsoft had put the complete windows 8.1 OS onto. BTW i had cleaned the drive with acronis drive cleanser 2016. before the start of the installation.when i started the installation, straight away windows asked whether i wanted to upgrade to windows 10 i declined (i am sure it asked again) i carefully made sure to decline any such offer.

when i went to the updates to prevent the update kb3035583 from being installed-i read here somewhere that if you prevent this update the process of windows hassling you to upgrade to win 10 is stopped. on other machines this has definitely been the case, when i checked the installed updates it wasn't there, strangely there were a few updates, that had been installed prior to the download.

when i selected "check for updates" only one option appeared-please see attached jpeg.it gives only the option to upgrade to windows 10. i want to know that if i click "get started" will it give me the option to decline after commencing the update? i have tried the other two options but they give no opportunity to decline their kind offer. given that i declined at least twice already i think that windows in this case is forcing me to upgrade to windows 10,totally against my wishes!

after reading the posts here i am reassured that i will be able to "revert" back to windows 8.1 if windows 10 does install-thank you!

that being said i do not wish to have windows 10 spyware anywhere near my machine in much the same way as i wouldn't want any google spyware products near it! i know that the spying aspect(s) of windows 10 can be disabled, but who's to say that microsoft wouldn't sneak in updates that go undetected for a period of time and could compromise ones privacy and be very difficult to reverse?

please advise.

please advise.

Did you try selecting Show All Available Updates ? This should show all other updates if any in the traditional update list then you can right click the W-10 upgrade item and hide the item.

it worked but still a slight problem

thank you, your suggestion has stopped the update for windows 10.

when hiding the update for windows 10,i noticed that kb3035583 has suddenly appeared,it was not there before. i deselected it and "hid" it.it became like greyed out like the hidden windows 10 update. during the next round of updates i checked to see if it was there and it was.like it had restored itself using "restore hidden updates" if that makes any sense.

is there any way to stop this update,so i don't have to check every time windows needs to update? i want to be able to go back so that i can let windows automatically download and update, without having to check for
kb3035583.

please advise.

First, you DO NOT want to have your system set to Automatically Check for and Install Updates. Either set it to Check for Updates Only and not install or turn Auto Updates off and check manually once a week or so and choose which updates you want to install. MS will continue to release KB3035583 so it will continue to show up and the actual upgrade to W-10 will show up periodically as well. You will need to hide them whenever they show up. There are some Registry changes that can be made to stop this process that you might consider. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 There are some other tutorials listed on this forum that you might want to check out and at least one by Brink that describe this process. In addition, I am not installing any updates that pertain to W-10 compatibility or additional telemetry as I don't trust MS not to mess with my Update settings. I am afraid we will need to be very vigilant in order to avoid the W-10 Upgrade at least until the one year passes on 7/29/2016 and after that? Who Knows!:(
