Corrupted registration key? Invalid location ID?

I bought an HP Envy 15 May of 2013. I did not want Win8 or a touchscreen, but that was all that I could find. I hardly used it the first two weeks and then the screen cracked, so I sent it in under the extended warranty. As I recall, I needed to reactivate Windows afterwards, and ended up calling Microsoft, after a great deal of wasted time.

Then some screw holes stripped (?!) on the bottom and the hinges worked loose. The screen cracked again, apparently from flexing. I could send it in one more time using the extended warranty, but an older laptop was working, so I put away the HP, although I am trying to send it in now.

I think that ever since I upgraded to 8.1 it has been telling me to reactivate Windows, but I have not used it much in two and a half years, so I cannot say for sure.

Squaretrade requires the Windows activation key to repair my laptop, which came without an optical drive, so it would not have had an installation DVD. I cannot find any registration keys anywhere, like I am accustomed. Windows did not give me an option for phone activation, so I tracked down the number, and the automated system sent me to Microsoft Product Activation, which asked for my location ID. How do you find that, SLUI 4? That would have been a helpful step to include at some point.

It told me that my installation ID was invalid.

I found a tool (off Download.com) to show me my key, but it gave me something completely different than the last five digits that Windows shows, and the system says that it is invalid.

Microsoft told me to call HP, who said the key was corrupted, but reinstalling Windows would fix it.

Hours and hours, several restarts, and hundreds of updates later, I still do not have any idea how to fix an invalid location ID or how the registration key for preinstalled Windows is invalid.

Can anyone provide me help? At least tell me where to look now?

Thank you very much!

Thanks! That program shows the generic key, while WinGuggle shows something completely different (which does not show up in Google), and it looks like Windows shows 46V6N-VCBYR-KT9KT-6Y4YF-QGJYH (only the last five digits appear, but that also seems to be a generic key, according to Google).

I do not have any idea why I am seeing three different keys, but it sounds like this is the problem:

Was it a completely "clean" install? as a reset/refresh won't work.

Windows should not be running when the repair is done (i.e the installation/repair must be a boot from USB), otherwise the corrupt files' permissions won't be overwritten.

Oh goodie!

Thank you. I will report back after all of that fun.

It looks like I have exactly the wrong flash drive for this:

The Sandisk Cruzer usb drives use drivers that install through windows 7 and 8 as if they were hard drives. They are not in the removable drives section and that is why it will not allow you to select it.
Windows 10 Media Creation Tool "We can't find a USB flash drive" - Super User

I cannot download the ISO to install myself because that requires an accepted product key.

I am mostly unemployed, so purchasing anything is not fun. Oh well.

I used various methods of accessing my key; it looks like some showed the generic one and some pulled up the embedded one. I collected cans, bought a new flash drive, used the media creator to put Windows on it, booted from USB, and it asked for my key, so I put in the one that did not show up through a Google search (now it does).

"This product key didn't work. Please check it and try again."

So, I tried the generic one:

"Compatibility report: Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade."

So, try again? I did this twice and it just said the same thing.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Xist,

The edition you download must match the key you have, otherwise you will get that.

What did ShowKey provide? Note you can click the key to mask it, we just need the edition(s) and if there is an OEM key etc.

Thank you Mr. Superfly for responding again,

ShowKey shows DQQ2P-YNF4V-CMQHJ-RPXK8-QC736, which shows up a couple dozen times via Google under:

OA3.0 Key Type : OEM:DM
Windows 8 Core

Windows says the current key is -
QGJYH and those same pages show:

Windows version Default product keys
Windows 8 46V6N-VCBYR-KT9KT-6Y4YF-QGJYH:

I had actually not tried the one that ShowKey showed, other methods gave me two other keys. I tried the one that had not shown up in Google at first, although it now appears at: Windows Serial - Pastebin.com and https://github.com/CNMan/balala/blob/master/Undefined_Keys.txt

(two lists of Windows keys)

Is it possible that someone stole my key and now I cannot use it?

I just tried the key that ShowKey showed and it still says "Compatibility report: Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade."

Apparently, that is only when I tell it to save my files. It reinstalled (again) when I told it to overwrite everything, but it still wants my product key, and continues to say that all three that I have pulled up are bad.

Can you post a screenshot? I'm not sure where those keys are coming from.
