Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes

I was checking out a friends laptop for them and noticed it had 155 updates needing to be installed. I went ahead and let them install. Now I have the message "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes". It has been this way for about 1.5 hrs. It will sometimes stop and says restarting and then goes right back to "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes". Is this normal behavior when you have 155 updates at once? Or is it just stuck in a loop? Should I force a shutdown even though it says "Do not turn off your computer"? Need some advice as to what to do.

I'm assuming it is 8.1 but I'm not 100% sure. It could be just 8 but I don't think it is.

UPDATE: It just restarted and booted to desktop. It took about 1.5 hours of "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes" with multiple restarts in between. I think I will do a few updates at a time since there are so many. Maybe that will help.
